Yakushima’s Illusion — Release Date: 6 February 2026 (Japan) | 25 February 2026 (France).
Directed by Naomi Kawase, starring Vicky Krieps and Kanichiro. An international co-production, the film is a drama set between Europe and Japan, exploring medical ethics, cultural belief systems, and human connection through a contemporary lens.
The story follows Corry, a French coordinator of pediatric heart transplants, whose professional responsibilities take her to Japan. Her work places her at the intersection of life-saving medical systems and cultural realities where organ donation remains deeply sensitive and, in many contexts, taboo. As Corry navigates unfamiliar institutional frameworks and social customs, her role extends beyond logistics into the realm of emotional mediation.
Set primarily on Yakushima, a forested island known for its ancient landscapes, the film situates its narrative within a natural environment that reflects cycles of life, death, and continuity. Corry’s encounters with local medical professionals, families, and community members reveal contrasting approaches to mortality and consent. These interactions are marked by restraint and silence as much as dialogue, emphasising the unspoken tensions surrounding the act of donation.
A developing relationship with Jin, a Japanese man connected to the medical and emotional realities Corry confronts, grounds the film’s cross-cultural perspective. Their connection unfolds within shared uncertainty rather than resolution, allowing the narrative to remain observational rather than prescriptive. The film does not frame its subject through argument or advocacy, instead presenting ethical conflict as a lived, ongoing process shaped by history, belief, and personal loss.
Naomi Kawase’s direction prioritises intimacy and presence, favouring natural light, extended takes, and environmental sound. The approach aligns with her longstanding interest in human vulnerability, spirituality, and the relationship between people and place. Yakushima’s physical geography becomes integral to the film’s tone, reinforcing themes of impermanence and coexistence.
Premiering in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, Yakushima’s Illusion positions itself as a reflective, character-driven drama. The film engages with global medical realities while remaining rooted in specific cultural contexts, offering a quiet exploration of care, responsibility, and the limits of understanding across borders.
