Netflix has officially pressed the pause button on its untitled historical epic centered on the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal, citing significant budget concerns. According to media reports, the film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan, was scheduled to begin shooting in Italy this summer.
The project was being developed as a large-scale historical epic centered on Hannibal Barca, the legendary Carthaginian military commander best known for leading his army across the Alps during the Second Punic War. Unlike a conventional biographical drama, the film was expected to explore Hannibal’s military campaigns against Rome, a scope that would likely require extensive battle sequences, large-scale period recreations, and international location work.
Logan’s involvement also attracted industry attention. The screenwriter’s credits include Gladiator, The Aviator, Skyfall, and Sweeney Todd, making the project one of the more notable historical dramas currently in development at Netflix.
If budget concerns are resolved, the film will mark the sixth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua. Their creative partnership began with the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, which earned Washington an Academy Award for Best Actor. The duo later reunited for The Magnificent Seven and the Equalizer trilogy, extending a collaboration that has spanned more than two decades.
Reports indicate the project had already moved beyond early development stages, with pre-production work and location planning underway ahead of its planned summer shoot. That makes the pause particularly notable, as Netflix appears to be reassessing the film’s scale rather than abandoning the project altogether.
Netflix has not publicly disclosed specific figures but several industry reports have suggested the project’s ambitious scope could result in a budget exceeding $200 million. The combination of large battle sequences, international production requirements, historical world-building, and practical location work would place the film among the streamer’s most expensive original productions. Despite the pause, the creative team remains attached to the project, with director Antoine Fuqua and actor Denzel Washington reportedly continuing discussions with Netflix to restructure the production plan rather than shelve the film entirely.
The development also arrives at a time when major streaming platforms are becoming increasingly selective about large-scale original productions. As studios and streamers place greater emphasis on cost efficiency, expensive historical epics have faced heightened scrutiny despite their prestige potential.
The budget pause comes shortly after Antoine Fuqua’s latest project, Michael, generated significant industry attention. The Michael Jackson biographical drama became one of the year’s most closely watched theatrical releases because of both its scale and commercial performance.
Michael emerged as a major box office success, demonstrating strong audience interest and helping Lionsgate secure one of its biggest theatrical performers in recent years. The film’s run was closely followed across the industry as it competed with several major studio releases and continued drawing audiences weeks after opening.
The strong performance also fueled discussion about the future of the property, with Lionsgate later indicating interest in continuing the story beyond a single film. The film represented Fuqua’s another large-scale production following projects such as The Equalizer 3 and Emancipation. Its performance kept attention firmly on the director’s upcoming slate, including his planned reunion with Denzel Washington on Hannibal.
The Hannibal project is now on pause at Netflix, it remains unclear whether the budget concerns can be resolved in time to keep the film on its originally planned production schedule.
