Warner Bros. is developing a new live-action The Flintstones movie, with Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson attached as producers through their Open Invite banner. The project remains in the early stages of development and is currently looking for a writer. However, one detail already sets the new film apart from previous adaptations: the story is reportedly being developed around a grown-up Bamm-Bamm Rubble rather than the franchise’s familiar central figures, Fred and Wilma Flintstone.
The reported focus on Bamm-Bamm could give the long-running franchise an opportunity to explore a different generation of Bedrock residents while remaining connected to one of animation’s best-known families. The character has traditionally been associated with Barney and Betty Rubble as their adopted son, but the new film could place him at the centre of a story for the first time in a major live-action production.
Gosling and Henderson are attached as producers, with their Open Invite company developing the project alongside Warner Bros. At this stage, however, no writer, director, cast, release date or complete story has been announced. Gosling’s involvement is therefore strictly behind the scenes for now and should not be interpreted as confirmation that he will appear in the film.
Bamm-Bamm is best known as the adopted son of Barney and Betty Rubble. Introduced as a young child, he quickly became one of the franchise’s most recognisable younger characters, largely because of his extraordinary strength and trademark club. But the character has previously been shown at an older age. The 1971 animated series The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show followed Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles Flintstone as teenagers, expanding the franchise beyond the original family setup.
That earlier series provides an interesting precedent for the new project. It demonstrated that Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm could carry stories from their own perspective, while Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty moved into supporting roles. The reported live-action film would take that idea even further by focusing on an adult Bamm-Bamm. Warner Bros., however, has not revealed exactly what stage of his life the story will explore or what the plot will involve.
Created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, The Flintstones premiered on ABC in 1960. Set in the Stone Age town of Bedrock, the animated series followed Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their neighbours Barney and Betty Rubble. Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm subsequently became important parts of the wider franchise, which expanded through animated spin-offs, specials and feature films.
The property has already made two major live-action trips to the big screen. The Flintstones, released in 1994, starred John Goodman as Fred Flintstone and Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble. The film earned approximately $358.5 million worldwide, demonstrating the commercial appeal of bringing the animated characters into live action.
A second theatrical film, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, arrived in 2000 as a prequel, with Mark Addy playing Fred and Stephen Baldwin as Barney. Unlike its predecessor, however, the film struggled commercially, earning approximately $59.4 million worldwide. Both movies centred heavily on the familiar relationship between Fred and Barney, making the reported Bamm-Bamm focus of the new project a notable change in direction.
Warner Bros. has yet to reveal how closely the new film will follow those earlier live-action adaptations or the original animated continuity. It is also unclear whether Fred, Barney, Pebbles or other familiar characters will appear. With the project still searching for a writer, its story and broader creative direction remain unknown.
For now, the most significant development is not simply that another Flintstones movie is being planned, but that Warner Bros. appears interested in exploring Bedrock through a character who has rarely received the same level of attention as Fred and Barney. With Gosling and Henderson producing and a writer still to be hired, the project has a considerable amount of development ahead of it.
The decision to put Bamm-Bamm at the centre nevertheless gives this new live-action Flintstones project a distinct starting point. Until more creative details emerge, audiences will have to wait to see what kind of story Warner Bros. ultimately builds around the grown-up character and how this new version of Bedrock will fit into the long-running franchise.
