Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing films such as Kaante, Shootout at Wadala and Kaabil, died on October 30, 2026, at the age of 59. His death was confirmed by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who expressed grief over the loss and remembered Gupta as a passionate filmmaker, an engaging storyteller and a lively personality. His passing marks the end of a filmmaking career spanning more than three decades in Hindi cinema.
According to reports, Gupta suffered a fall at his residence in Mumbai and sustained a head injury. Initial reports from Film Information and IANS indicated that he was found after the incident, although details surrounding the circumstances remain unclear. His death has prompted tributes from members of the film industry, remembering his contribution to mainstream Hindi cinema, particularly in the crime and action genres.
Gupta began his directorial career with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994, starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi. The film established his interest in action-driven narratives, a filmmaking approach that would become a recurring feature of his work. He subsequently directed films such as Ram Shastra (1995), Hameshaa (1997), Jung (2000) and Khauff (2000), gradually developing a reputation for crime dramas, revenge stories and stylised action sequences.
One of the most significant films of his career was Kaante (2002), an ensemble crime drama featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav. Directed, written and produced by Gupta, the film followed six Indian criminals who come together to plan a bank robbery in Los Angeles. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and other international crime films, Kaante developed a cult following and remains among Gupta’s most recognised directorial works.
His professional association with Sanjay Dutt continued through films such as Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006). Their collaborations were particularly associated with action, crime and unconventional characters, establishing a notable director-actor partnership in Hindi cinema.
Gupta was also closely associated with the Shootout franchise, although his involvement in its two instalments differed. He served as a producer and co-writer on Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), which was directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Based on the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout involving Mumbai Police and gangster Maya Dolas, the film featured Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi, Amitabh Bachchan, Suniel Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan. Its portrayal of the Mumbai underworld and police encounters made it one of the prominent crime dramas of that period.
He returned as director with Shootout at Wadala (2013), starring John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee and Sonu Sood. Inspired by the 1982 police encounter involving gangster Manya Surve, the film continued Gupta’s exploration of Mumbai’s criminal underworld and its relationship with law enforcement.
Beyond crime dramas, Gupta explored different subjects and genres through films such as the anthology Dus Kahaniyaan (2007), Acid Factory (2009), Jazbaa (2015), Kaabil (2017) and Mumbai Saga (2021). Jazbaa, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan, was a crime thriller centred on a lawyer whose daughter is kidnapped. Kaabil, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam, followed a visually impaired man seeking revenge after a personal tragedy. With Mumbai Saga, starring John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, Gupta returned to the changing landscape of Mumbai’s underworld.
Alongside directing, Gupta established his production banner, White Feather Films, in 2001. The company backed several projects, including Kaante, Musafir, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Woodstock Villa and Acid Factory. His work as a producer allowed him to collaborate on projects beyond his directorial assignments and build a production identity around mainstream Hindi cinema.
Before establishing himself as a filmmaker, Gupta also worked in post-production and sound design. He assisted director Pankaj Parashar on projects including the television series Karamchand and the film Jalwa, gaining experience in different aspects of film production.
Among his later projects were The Miranda Brothers (2024), featuring Meezaan Jafri and Harshvardhan Rane, and Visfot (2024), starring Riteish Deshmukh and Fardeen Khan. These projects reflected his continued association with Hindi cinema as a director and producer.
Sanjay Gupta leaves behind a filmography that moved across crime dramas, action thrillers and commercial entertainers. His collaborations with Sanjay Dutt, his association with the Shootout films and the cult following of Kaante remain important parts of his contribution to Hindi cinema.
