The official trailer for The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s upcoming science fiction drama, has been released ahead of the film’s theatrical debut on August 28. Adapted from Peter Heller’s bestselling 2012 novel, the film marks Scott’s first return to the sci-fi genre since Alien: Covenant (2017).
Set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a deadly flu pandemic, The Dog Stars follows Hig, a former civilian pilot struggling to survive on an abandoned airfield alongside Bangley, a hardened ex-Marine, and his loyal dog. Their isolated existence changes when Hig intercepts a mysterious radio transmission suggesting that other survivors may still be alive.
The trailer opens with Hig reflecting on life before the pandemic, when he shared a peaceful life with his wife and dog. It quickly shifts to a desolate landscape filled with abandoned vehicles, wreckage, and deserted streets, illustrating a world left behind after civilization’s collapse. Bangley warns that survival has become “kill or be killed,” setting the tone for the dangerous journey ahead.
Determined to discover the source of the radio signal, Hig takes to the skies in his small aircraft and eventually makes contact with a woman named Cima. Initially viewed as an outsider when he reaches her community, Hig slowly earns their trust as he and Cima bond over memories of the world they lost. The trailer concludes with an intense aerial escape sequence as Hig and Cima attempt to flee while being pursued by an armed group, teasing both emotional drama and large-scale action.
The footage emphasizes isolation, hope, and survival while showcasing Ridley Scott’s signature visual scale, blending intimate character moments with sweeping post-apocalyptic landscapes.
Jacob Elordi stars as Hig, while Josh Brolin plays Bangley, a former Marine who becomes both protector and mentor. Margaret Qualley portrays Cima, with Guy Pearce appearing as her father, a former Navy SEAL initially suspicious of Hig. Allison Janney and Benedict Wong complete the supporting cast.
The screenplay is written by Mark L. Smith, based on Peter Heller’s novel. Ridley Scott also serves as producer alongside Michael Pruss and Cliff Roberts, with Heller among the executive producers. Erik Messerschmidt serves as cinematographer, while Harry Gregson-Williams composes the score. Filming took place across locations in Italy, including Bordano, Cansiglio, and Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, as well as at Pinewood Studios in England. The production is reported to have a budget of approximately $110 million.
Behind the scenes, Josh Brolin recently revealed that he nearly left the production after his first day of filming, finding Ridley Scott’s fast-paced, multi-camera directing style overwhelming. After taking time to adjust, however, the actor chose to remain with the project and has since described the experience as one of the most rewarding collaborations of his career.
Widely regarded as one of cinema’s defining science fiction filmmakers, Ridley Scott directed genre classics such as Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, The Martian, and Alien: Covenant before turning his attention to historical dramas including The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, and Gladiator II. The Dog Stars therefore marks a notable return to the genre that helped define his career.
Jacob Elordi continues his rapid rise as one of Hollywood’s leading young actors following acclaimed performances in Saltburn, Priscilla, and Frankenstein, while also recently completing work on Euphoria and Wuthering Heights.
The Dog Stars is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on August 28, 2026.
