Netflix has officially begun production on The Inbetweeners 3 in the UK, bringing Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas back as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper. Original creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are also returning to write and direct the third film, marking the first new Inbetweeners movie since 2014.
The returning cast reunites the central group that defined the franchise. Bird will once again play Will McKenzie, Buckley returns as Jay Cartwright, Harrison reprises Neil Sutherland and Thomas is back as Simon Cooper. Their return gives the new film a direct connection to the characters who made both the television series and its two feature films popular.
Beesley and Morris are also returning behind the camera. The pair created the original series and wrote the earlier films, and Netflix has confirmed that they will write and direct The Inbetweeners 3. The Inbetweeners originally ran on Channel 4 from 2008 to 2010. The coming-of-age comedy followed four friends navigating school, friendship, awkward relationships and embarrassing situations at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. Its humour came from presenting teenage life as awkward and recognisable rather than polished or glamorous. The series stood apart from teen dramas such as Skins, focusing instead on everyday awkwardness and the friendships, ambitions, mistakes and attempts to fit in that shaped its four central characters.
The television series was followed by The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011 and The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014. Both films performed strongly at the British box office. The first movie opened at No. 1 and became the biggest opening weekend ever for a UK comedy at the time, eventually grossing £65.1 million. The Inbetweeners 2 followed with £46.6 million, demonstrating the franchise’s strong connection with British audiences.
The Inbetweeners 3 arrives 12 years after the second film and 16 years after the television series ended. While production is now underway, Netflix has not revealed details of the new story or what the four characters will face this time. For now, the confirmed premise is a continuation of the franchise with its original leads and creators reunited.
The production is also bringing back one of the franchise’s most recognisable details: Simon’s yellow Fiat Cinquecento. A teaser shows the four friends together in the familiar car, which struggles to start before they drive away. The moment connects the new film with the earlier series and movies while giving longtime fans an immediate reminder of the franchise’s visual identity.
The new film also gives The Inbetweeners a wider international home. While the franchise began as a British television comedy, The Inbetweeners 3 is being made for Netflix, potentially allowing audiences around the world to discover the continuation. No official release date has been announced, so there is currently no confirmed 2027 release date.
