Universal Pictures has revealed the official title of its long-awaited sequel, The Mummy: Book of the Dead, reuniting Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for a new theatrical adventure scheduled to arrive on October 15, 2027. Filming is underway in London, with the fourth instalment bringing back familiar faces from the 1999 original and its 2001 sequel. The reunion offers audiences a return to the world of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell nearly three decades after the franchise began.

The title gives the upcoming film a new identity while looking back to the series’ best-loved era. The original The Mummy combined desert dangers, supernatural scares, fast-paced action and playful humour, with Fraser’s daring adventurer Rick O’Connell and Weisz’s resourceful Egyptologist Evelyn at its centre. Their chemistry helped make the 1999 film a crowd-pleasing adventure, and their return is a major draw of the new chapter.

Fraser and Weisz will reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, while John Hannah, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor are also returning. Hannah will once again play Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan, Fehr will reprise his role as Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay, and O’Connor will return as Beni Gabor. Their involvement reunites several familiar characters rather than asking a new cast to recreate the appeal of the early films.

The timing makes the reunion particularly notable. The new film is scheduled to arrive 28 years after the 1999 original, which established the franchise’s distinctive blend of old-fashioned adventure and Egyptian mythology. The series continued with The Mummy Returns in 2001, followed by The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, which took the story in a different direction. Weisz did not appear in that instalment, with Maria Bello playing Evelyn instead.

Fraser has described the upcoming project as the true third chapter in the story he wanted to continue, distinguishing it from the 2008 film. He has previously characterised that production as a standalone entry made quickly in connection with the Beijing Olympics. The new sequel therefore points back towards the story of Rick and Evelyn that began in 1999. However, Universal has yet to disclose plot details, leaving the precise direction of their next adventure under wraps.

Behind the camera, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, are directing. The pair have built a reputation for combining horror, dark comedy and energetic set pieces in films including Ready or Not and Abigail, as well as Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Their involvement brings a distinct genre background to a franchise that has consistently balanced supernatural threats with humour and action.

The earlier films paired family banter and comic mishaps with curses, monsters and peril. That tonal balance became central to the franchise’s appeal, allowing the adventures to deliver spectacle without losing their lighter touch. Radio Silence’s experience across horror and comedy provides a different creative perspective for the returning series, although the filmmakers’ precise approach to the new instalment remains to be seen.

Production is now underway in London, with the film scheduled to reach cinemas on October 15, 2027. Universal has not yet released a full synopsis or explained what the title’s reference to the Book of the Dead means for the story. At this stage, the confirmed cast reunion and the return of the original leads are the clearest indications of what audiences can expect.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead faces the challenge of welcoming viewers who grew up with the original films while giving the story a reason to continue beyond nostalgia. Bringing Fraser and Weisz back together, alongside Hannah, Fehr and O’Connor, establishes a strong connection to the franchise’s roots. If Radio Silence can preserve the series’ combination of danger, wit and sweeping adventure, the next expedition could feel less like a return to the past and more like a continuation of the story audiences have been waiting to revisit.
