Sony Pictures has officially locked in July 30, 2027, as the release date for The Comebacker, a baseball comedy starring Tom Hanks. The film is directed by Marielle Heller and is based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize finalist Dave Eggers. Sony won a competitive bidding war against Republic Pictures and Focus Features to land the film, highlighting the strong interest it generated in Hollywood.

The Comebacker is adapted from a short story by Dave Eggers, part of his series The Forgetters. The story follows Lionel Vratimos, a veteran beat reporter who covers the San Francisco Giants. His enthusiasm for both the job and baseball itself has faded over time. Everything changes when a new pitcher named Nathan Couture arrives from the minor leagues. Couture is unusually tall, lanky, and genuinely interested in the stories Lionel writes about him. That rare connection between a reporter and a player gradually pulls Lionel back to the reason he fell in love with the game in the first place. It is a story about second chances and rediscovering a passion that had slowly faded.

For Tom Hanks, the film marks a return to familiar territory. Fans of classic baseball cinema will remember Hanks as the loud, lovable manager Jimmy Dugan in A League of Their Own (1992), a performance that has remained popular with audiences for more than three decades. The Comebacker brings him back to the world of baseball, this time as a reporter rather than a manager, while retaining a similarly heartfelt spirit.

What is even more surprising is that this marks the third time Tom Hanks has starred in a film adapted from Dave Eggers’ writing. He previously appeared in A Hologram for the King (2016), directed by Tom Tykwer, and The Circle (2017), directed by James Ponsoldt. The Comebacker now becomes the third Eggers adaptation to feature Hanks, continuing a creative association that has spanned nearly a decade.

Another notable aspect of The Comebacker is Hanks’ reunion with director Marielle Heller. Heller previously directed him in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019), in which he portrayed the iconic television host Fred Rogers. The performance earned Hanks an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film was widely praised for its emotional storytelling, and Heller’s direction played a significant role in its success. The pair now reunite for The Comebacker.

The screenplay is being written by David Magee, another familiar collaborator in Hanks’ recent career. Magee was one of the writers of A Man Called Otto (2022), in which Hanks starred as a widower whose life is transformed by his new neighbours. The film went on to earn more than $113 million worldwide at the box office. The creative team behind The Comebacker therefore brings together several collaborators who have previously worked with Hanks.

The film is being produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman under their Playtone banner, the production company the duo co-founded in 1998, alongside SF Studios. The project is also being made in cooperation with Major League Baseball, giving it an official connection to the sport at the centre of its story.

With a compelling source story, an experienced creative team, and Sony Pictures backing the project, The Comebacker is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 30, 2027.
