Vertical has acquired the U.S. domestic rights to Unbearable Christmas, the new holiday comedy starring Alex Moffat and Julia Stiles, and will release the film exclusively through streaming during the 2026 holiday season. The streaming platform will be announced later. Directed by Kevin Cate in his feature debut, the film brings together Caroline Rhea, Mena Suvari, David Cross and Emmy Award winner Stephen Root for a Christmas road trip that begins with a pawned teddy bear and somehow leads to a multimillion-dollar Teddy Roosevelt antique.

At the centre of the story is Troy Tipton, played by Alex Moffat, an out-of-work weatherman who has one very specific goal before Christmas: to get back the beloved teddy bear he pawned for holiday cash. He sets off with his wife, Becca, played by Julia Stiles, his mother-in-law, Dawn, played by Caroline Rhea, and the children, travelling from Ohio to Florida in an old news van. What sounds like a small family mission quickly becomes something far more valuable when they discover that the teddy bear is actually a priceless Teddy Roosevelt antique worth millions.

That strange turn is one of the film’s biggest hooks. The story takes a familiar holiday road-trip setup and gives it an unexpected object at the centre, allowing the comedy to move between family tension, bad decisions and the increasingly absurd consequences of trying to get home for Christmas. It also gives Unbearable Christmas a cinematic quality that goes beyond another seasonal family comedy: the journey itself becomes the source of the chaos.

Kevin Cate has been open about the kind of movie he wanted to make. He described the film as “Christmas Vacation meets Little Miss Sunshine,” with the goal of creating a timeless, quotable and rewatchable Christmas movie. He has also said the film draws from the holiday comedies he grew up watching on VHS, the kind that families could return to year after year and still find something to enjoy.

The ensemble gives that idea plenty of room to play. Alongside Alex Moffat and Julia Stiles are David Cross, Caroline Rhea, Mena Suvari and Stephen Root, while Kennedy Moyer, Ben Lewis Doherty, Valyn Hall and Blake Sennett also appear. The film even includes a cameo from veteran television weatherman Al Roker, a fitting touch for a story built around a weatherman whose Christmas plans go spectacularly wrong.

There is another unusual connection behind the camera. Blake Sennett, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Cate and also produced the film with him, is known beyond acting and filmmaking as the lead guitarist of indie rock band Rilo Kiley. His involvement gives the project an unexpected link between indie music and holiday comedy, while adding another distinctive name to an already eclectic creative team.

Unbearable Christmas was independently produced by Kevin Cate and Blake Sennett under Clinging Vine Films, and production wrapped in Georgia in 2025. The film is now moving into its next stage with Vertical, which has positioned it for an exclusive streaming release this holiday season.

The acquisition gives Unbearable Christmas a fresh original comedy to enter the crowded Christmas viewing season. The film also has a simple reason to stand out: it takes the familiar idea of a family trying to make it home for the holidays and adds a teddy bear, a road trip, a fortune and an increasingly impossible situation. If Kevin Cate’s vision lands as intended, this may be the kind of Christmas movie that audiences discover this year and return to when the holidays come around again. That combination of warmth, eccentricity and old-fashioned holiday chaos could give the film a place in viewers’ Christmas routines for years to come, rather than only briefly.
