US Box Office: Other Mommy Opens at No. 1 as The Social Reckoning Flops and Digger Drops 60%

Other Mommy leads the US box office as The Social Reckoning and Digger struggle

Universal Pictures’ horror film Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, led the US box office over the October 9–11 weekend with an estimated $27.5 million debut, comfortably outpacing Sony’s The Social Reckoning, which opened in fifth place with $5.5 million. Warner Bros.’ Digger, meanwhile, suffered a 60% decline in its second weekend, collecting $3.2 million as its domestic total reached approximately $14.43 million. The weekend marked another difficult frame for several major releases, even as the domestic box office crossed $8 billion in year-to-date revenue.

The weekend’s results placed Other Mommy at the top of the chart, followed by Amazon MGM’s Verity, Sony’s Resident Evil and Paramount’s Heart of the Beast. The two wide new releases had sharply different openings, with the horror film attracting the largest audience while Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook drama struggled to find a substantial theatrical audience. The latest figures also showed significant declines for several holdovers, including Verity and Digger.

Other Mommy opened with $27.5 million from 3,365 theatres, exceeding the pre-release forecast of $17 million to $22 million. The Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster production stars Chastain in a horror story involving a sinister entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother. Its reported production budget is approximately $19 million, while international earnings of around $17.7 million brought its worldwide opening to approximately $45.2 million.

The opening came despite a poor critical and audience reception. The film received a D+ CinemaScore, while its Rotten Tomatoes scores were around 20% among critics and 47% among audiences in the weekend reporting. Those figures provide an early indication of the response to the film, although its opening-weekend performance alone does not establish how it will perform over the remainder of its theatrical run.

Sony’s The Social Reckoning finished fifth with an estimated $5.5 million from 2,606 theatres. The film, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, opened below the $7 million to $8 million range cited in pre-release reporting. Its reported production budget is approximately $30 million, making the debut a disappointing start for the follow-up to The Social Network. The film also collected approximately $3.5 million from 29 international markets, bringing its worldwide opening to around $9 million.

The Social Reckoning follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, who enlists the help of journalist Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, to expose the social media company’s internal practices. The film received a B- CinemaScore and a reported 54% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its opening was considerably below the approximately $22 million domestic debut of The Social Network in 2010, although the two films arrived in different theatrical markets and more than a decade apart.

The weekend also brought another setback for Digger, starring Tom Cruise. The Warner Bros. release earned approximately $3.2 million in its second frame, down 60% from its opening weekend. Its domestic total reached approximately $14.43 million after ten days in theatres. The film opened to around $8 million the previous weekend, and its second-weekend decline leaves its domestic performance well below the scale associated with a major production. Reports have placed its production budget at approximately $180 million, although budget estimates should be treated as reported figures rather than final audited costs.

Among the holdovers, Verity finished second with approximately $11.48 million, declining 64% in its second weekend. The Amazon MGM psychological thriller, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, took its domestic total to approximately $53.86 million. Its second-weekend performance followed an opening that placed it near the top of the domestic chart, although the latest frame brought a substantial reduction in ticket sales.

Resident Evil ranked third with $8.35 million in its fourth weekend, down approximately 34% from the previous frame. Its domestic total reached about $138.53 million. The Sony release continued to occupy a position among the weekend’s leading films, ahead of Heart of the Beast, which collected $7.1 million in its third weekend. The Paramount survival thriller declined 35%, taking its domestic total to approximately $49.66 million.

The remaining films in the top 10 included Forgotten Island, which earned $4.5 million in its third weekend, down 38%, bringing its domestic total to approximately $30.27 million. A24’s Primetime collected approximately $4.01 million, declining 48%, for a domestic total of about $41.47 million. Angel and the Badman debuted in ninth place with approximately $2.06 million from 2,263 theatres.

Rounding out the top 10, The Odyssey earned approximately $2 million from 560 theatres, an increase of 54% from the previous weekend. Its domestic cumulative gross reached approximately $622.97 million. Outside the top 10, Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth returned to theatres for its 20th anniversary and collected an estimated $1.66 million from 1,168 locations, placing 11th.

The wider domestic market generated an estimated $85.157 million over October 9–11. That represented a 15.6% decline from the previous weekend but an 18.5% increase over the comparable weekend in 2025. Year-to-date domestic box office through October 11 reached approximately $8.07 billion, compared with $6.75 billion at the same point last year, an increase of 19.6%. The domestic market crossed the $8 billion milestone on Friday, October 9.
