Digger — Release Date: 2 October 2026. Directed by Alejandro G. Produced by Legendary Pictures in association with Warner Bros. Pictures, the satirical black comedy marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant (2015) and his first collaboration with Tom Cruise.

The story follows Digger Rockwell, one of the world’s most powerful and influential figures, who embarks on a desperate race against time after a catastrophic event threatens humanity’s future. Determined to convince the world that he alone can prevent global destruction, Digger attempts to reshape his public image while confronting the far-reaching consequences of his own actions. Blending political satire, dark comedy, and large-scale spectacle, the narrative examines power, responsibility, ego, and the modern culture of celebrity leadership through an increasingly chaotic series of events.

Tom Cruise leads the film as Digger Rockwell, portraying a larger-than-life figure caught between public perception and personal ambition. The ensemble cast includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, and Pip Torrens, while John Goodman appears as the President of the United States. Mercedes Hernández also features in a supporting role as Digger’s longtime housekeeper, contributing to the film’s expansive cast of political, corporate, and personal characters.

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu returns with a project that combines large-scale studio filmmaking with his signature character-driven storytelling. Known for acclaimed films such as Birdman, The Revenant, and Bardo, Iñárritu explores themes of ambition, morality, and human behavior through the lens of satire and dark comedy. The screenplay reunites him with longtime collaborators Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone while introducing playwright Sabina Berman as a co-writer.

Principal photography took place at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom and concluded in 2025, with Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki capturing the film on 35mm VistaVision. Visual effects are provided by Industrial Light & Magic and Legacy Effects, supporting the film’s blend of grounded performances and large-scale cinematic spectacle.

Combining black comedy, political satire, and disaster storytelling, Digger explores the relationship between power, accountability, and public perception through one of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s most ambitious productions. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in IMAX and standard formats on 2 October 2026.
