US Box Office Weekend 19: Thunderbolts Holds Strong as Clown in a Cornfield Surprises

US Box Office Weekend 19: Thunderbolts Holds Strong as Clown in a Cornfield Surprises
May 12, 2025

The second weekend of May delivered a varied mix at the US box office, with Marvel’s Thunderbolts continuing its dominant run despite a sharp drop, while new horror title Clown in a Cornfield emerged as a surprise entrant in the top five. Meanwhile, several new releases launched modestly, and high-profile films like The Accountant 2 and A Minecraft Movie posted significant declines.

Thunderbolts Leads Again Despite Big Drop

Marvel’s Thunderbolts topped the charts for a second straight weekend, earning an estimated $33.1 million, down 55.5% from its opening frame. While the drop is steep, it’s typical for comic book tentpoles. The film played in 4,330 theaters, with a strong per-theater average of $7,644, bringing its domestic total to $128.45 million in just 10 days. The ensemble superhero flick continues to anchor Disney’s summer slate, though its second-week fall signals a front-loaded performance.

Sinners Remains a Major Hit in Week 4

Holding firm in second place, Warner Bros.’ Sinners added $21.1 million, dropping just 36.3% in its fourth weekend. The film’s impressive hold across 3,502 theaters and its healthy per-theater average of $6,025 pushed its domestic total to a robust $214.4 million. A genre-bending vampire thriller, Sinners is proving to be one of the spring’s biggest original success stories.

Minecraft Slips Further, But Crosses $400M Mark

In its sixth weekend, A Minecraft Movie fell 42.1%, collecting $7.95 million from 3,468 screens. The per-theater average stood at a moderate $2,292, but its overall domestic haul reached a remarkable $408.99 million, confirming its status as a major box office juggernaut despite recent weekly dip

The Accountant 2 Stalls Below Expectations

Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2, now in its third week, earned just $6.1 million, down 35.8% from the previous weekend. Playing on 3,402 screens, its per-theater average of $1,791 reflects soft audience interest. The sequel’s total domestic gross stands at $50.9 million, a disappointing figure given its production budget and the sleeper success of the original. Amazon MGM Studios may pivot its focus toward digital and streaming success to recoup costs.

New Horror Title Clown in a Cornfield Makes a Solid Start

Among the weekend’s new releases, RLJ Entertainment’s Clown in a Cornfield debuted the highest, landing in fifth place with $3.65 million from 2,277 locations. The horror adaptation of the cult YA novel scored a modest per-theater average of $1,602, signaling decent genre interest, though not breakout levels.

Shadow Force and Fight or Flight Open Softly

Two more newcomers—Shadow Force from Lionsgate and Fight or Flight from Vertical Entertainment—both opened with similar results. Shadow Force earned $2.015 million from 2,170 theaters, while Fight or Flight took in $2.001 million from 2,153 venues. Per-theater averages hovered just below $930, suggesting minimal traction for either mid-budget action title.

Holdovers Decline as Theater Counts Shrink

Until Dawn, now in its third weekend, dropped 47.7%, adding $2 million for a total of $18 million. Meanwhile, The Amateur fell 42.7%, grossing $1.1 million in its fifth frame, bringing its cumulative gross to $38.95 million. Both titles saw steep declines in theater counts, reflecting reduced demand.

Angel Studios’ The King of Kings Nears End of Run

Faith-based drama The King of Kings grossed $681K in its fifth weekend, falling 60.2% from last week. With a total domestic take of $59.07 million, the film has exceeded expectations for its genre and distributor, Angel Studios.

Weekend 19 proved to be a mixed bag for the domestic box office. While Thunderbolts and Sinners continued to lead with strong numbers, most other titles underwhelmed or declined heavily. Notably, The Accountant 2 failed to rebound, and none of the new releases broke out in a significant way. With several high-profile titles on the horizon, the summer box office now turns its attention to upcoming blockbusters to sustain momentum.

Boxoffice data is subject to change as more updates arrives.
