Valentine’s Day weekend brought a mix of romance, holdover strength and mid-range action to the Indian box office, with fresh releases fighting for attention while established performers continued their theatrical runs. The three-day frame saw noticeable spikes on Saturday across most films, underlining the holiday effect, but Sunday drops for some titles also signalled that word-of-mouth remains the ultimate deciding factor.
Leading the weekend was O Romeo, which opened to a solid ₹30.15 crore in its first three days. The romantic drama began with ₹8.5 crore on Friday, jumped sharply by 48.82% on Saturday to ₹12.65 crore, before dipping to ₹9 crore on Sunday. The Valentine’s factor clearly boosted Saturday business, but the Sunday fall indicates that the film will need steady weekday holds to build long-term momentum. A ₹30 crore-plus opening weekend gives it a respectable launchpad, especially in a competitive market, but its trajectory will now depend on how well it sustains through the first week.
In contrast, Funky had a modest start, collecting ₹5.8 crore over its opening weekend. After earning ₹2.2 crore on Friday, the film slipped on Saturday to ₹1.9 crore and further dipped to ₹1.68 crore on Sunday, taking its three-day total to ₹5.8 crore. The absence of weekend growth is a concern, and unless weekday drops are controlled, it could struggle to build meaningful numbers beyond its opening frame.
Among the holdovers, Mardaani 3 demonstrated resilience in its third weekend. The film collected ₹0.6 crore on Friday, saw a strong Saturday jump of 175% to ₹1.65 crore, and added ₹1.05 crore on Sunday, bringing its Valentine’s weekend total to ₹3.3 crore. With Week 1 at ₹26.3 crore and Week 2 at ₹14.6 crore, the film now stands at ₹44.20 crore after 17 days. The third-weekend spike suggests that the franchise factor and steady audience support are helping it inch closer to the ₹50 crore mark.
Meanwhile, Border 2 continues its remarkable run even in its fourth week. The war drama earned ₹0.8 crore on Friday, rose significantly to ₹1.9 crore on Saturday, and collected ₹1.5 crore on Sunday, delivering a ₹4.2 crore weekend total. After posting ₹224.25 crore in Week 1, ₹70.15 crore in Week 2, and ₹23.35 crore in Week 3, the film’s total now stands at a massive ₹321.95 crore after 24 days. Though collections have naturally slowed, its sustained weekend growth pattern proves that the film still commands theatrical traction.
On the regional front, Prakambanam added ₹1.39 crore over its third weekend, with ₹0.31 crore on Friday, ₹0.57 crore on Saturday, and ₹0.51 crore on Sunday. With Week 1 at ₹5.55 crore and Week 2 at ₹4.39 crore, the film’s cumulative total now reaches ₹11.33 crore after 17 days. While modest in scale compared to bigger releases, its steady holds reflect consistent audience engagement within its market.
Overall, the Valentine’s Day weekend was powered by romance and sustained franchise loyalty. O Romeo delivered the biggest push among new releases, while Border 2 and Mardaani 3 continued to extract value from their theatrical runs. The coming weekdays will determine whether the newcomers can convert holiday momentum into long-term stability or whether holdovers will continue dominating the charts.
