Chinese sci-fi action thriller Variant, directed by Qilin Li, has secured distribution deals across North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America, expanding its international reach. International Media Network (IMN) has acquired the film’s rights for the United States and Canada, while additional agreements cover territories across Europe and Asia.
Sales company Cappu Films announced the deals at TIFFCOM, the film and television market associated with the Tokyo International Film Festival. The company is continuing negotiations with prospective buyers for territories that remain available. Financial terms of the agreements have not been disclosed.
IMN will handle Variant in the United States and Canada. In Europe, MT Trading has acquired the rights for Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. Blue Swan Entertainment has secured Italy, Italian-speaking Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City, while Media4Fun has acquired the film for Poland.
Great Movies will handle distribution across Latin America. In Asia, Dimension Pictures has acquired the rights for the SAARC territories of South Asia, while San Chi Films has secured Taiwan. The Japanese deal was brokered by Bob Jones of IPA Asia.
The agreements establish a distribution presence for Variant across a broad range of international markets, although further territories remain open for negotiations. Release dates and specific distribution plans for the secured markets have not yet been announced.
Directed by Qilin Li, Variant follows Jamie, a survivor of an alien creature’s attack aboard a spacecraft. After escaping to Earth, he spends the next 20 years away from the threat that destroyed his family. His past catches up with him when a new variant of the creature appears, forcing him to confront the danger once again.
The film combines science fiction, action and creature-driven suspense, centring on a survivor who must face an enemy he believed he had escaped. The emergence of a new version of the creature introduces another dimension to the threat and sets up a renewed confrontation between Jamie and the alien force responsible for his family’s destruction.
The cast includes Jim Liu, whose credits include The Farewell and Ip Man 4: The Finale, alongside Shuting Yang and Philippe Joly.
Cappu Films announced the international sales agreements and highlighted its previous collaboration with Li and the production team on Mutant. Janice Woo of Cappu Films said the experience of working with the team had been positive, emphasising the company’s interest in building relationships with filmmakers across multiple projects.
Cappu Films handles international sales and distribution, focusing on independent filmmakers and genre titles with the potential to reach audiences beyond their home markets. Its ongoing discussions with prospective buyers indicate that the company is continuing to pursue additional territories for Variant.
The latest agreements extend the film’s international distribution network across North America, several European markets, Latin America and parts of Asia. Announced at TIFFCOM, the deals mark a further step in the film’s overseas sales campaign. However, the timing of its release in individual territories remains unconfirmed.
Cappu Films is continuing negotiations for markets not yet secured. Further announcements are expected to clarify where and when international audiences will be able to watch the film.
