Amazon MGM Studios has released a new trailer for Verity, the upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller. Starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, the film is directed by Michael Showalter and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 2, 2026. The latest footage offers a darker look at the mysterious Crawford household and the increasingly disturbing secrets uncovered by Johnson’s character, Lowen Ashleigh.
The trailer establishes the uneasy relationship at the center of the story. Lowen is a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford to complete the remaining books in the series written by his wife, Verity, a celebrated author who has been left incapacitated following an accident. Lowen moves into the Crawford family home to work on the books, but soon discovers that there is considerably more to Verity’s story than she was initially told.
The most disturbing discovery is an unfinished autobiographical manuscript written by Verity. Its contents contain revelations about her marriage, her children and events within the Crawford household, forcing Lowen to question how much she can trust the people around her. The trailer keeps much of that mystery intact while suggesting that the manuscript could fundamentally change her understanding of Verity and Jeremy.
Hathaway’s performance is central to the new footage. Although Verity is physically incapacitated for much of the story, the character remains a powerful presence throughout Lowen’s experience in the house. The trailer repeatedly uses Hathaway’s expressions and voice to suggest that Verity may have far more control over the situation than her physical condition initially indicates. Other coverage of the trailer has similarly highlighted the unsettling quality of Hathaway’s performance.
Johnson plays Lowen, whose investigation gradually pulls her deeper into the Crawford family’s secrets, while Hartnett portrays Jeremy. The three characters form the core of the film’s psychological tension, with the trailer deliberately keeping questions about their motivations and relationships unresolved.
Verity is based on Hoover’s 2018 novel, which became a major bestseller and developed a substantial readership for its unreliable perspective, ambiguous conclusion and darker subject matter. Hoover is also a producer on the film alongside Showalter, screenwriter Nick Antosca, Hathaway and others.
The adaptation comes as Hollywood continues to bring Hoover’s novels to the big screen. It Ends With Us, Regretting You and Reminders of Him have also received theatrical adaptations, making Verity the latest of her novels to move into cinemas. The film is consequently arriving with an audience already familiar with Hoover’s work, while its psychological-thriller elements distinguish it from her more conventional romantic dramas.
Showalter directs the film from Antosca’s screenplay. The filmmaker previously directed The Big Sick and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Volker Bertelmann, who won an Academy Award for All Quiet on the Western Front, provides the score. The cast also includes Ismael Cruz Córdova, Brady Wagner, K.K. Moggie and Michael Abbott Jr.
The film carries a reported $40 million production budget. Amazon MGM Studios will distribute it in the United States and Canada, while Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling international territories.
The October release follows a change from the film’s original May 15, 2026 date. The new positioning gives Verity a fall theatrical release and places the adaptation among Amazon MGM’s major releases for the second half of the year.
For Hathaway, Verity is another major release in an unusually busy 2026. She has already appeared in Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey, with The End of Oak Street also scheduled to open before Verity.
The new trailer ultimately keeps the central mystery of Verity intact rather than revealing the novel’s most important answers. Instead, it focuses on the uneasy atmosphere of the Crawford home, the increasingly complicated relationship between Lowen and Jeremy, and Hathaway’s unsettling presence as Verity. With the film arriving on October 2, audiences will soon find out how closely Showalter and Antosca’s adaptation follows the psychological twists that made Hoover’s novel such a widely discussed thriller.
