Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed a major update on the long-discussed sequel to 3 Idiots: the story is still being written, with the original cast expected to return. Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are set to revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju, with the new story taking place roughly 20 years after the events of the 2009 film. Instead of returning to their college years, the sequel will explore what happened to the three friends as adults. Hirani has also made it clear that the film will move forward only when he and his team are satisfied with the script.
The idea for the sequel reportedly came together while Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi were working on another story. They began to feel that the material could fit the lives of the 3 Idiots characters, eventually leading them towards the possibility of a second chapter. However, Hirani has stressed that the project remains at the writing stage and should not be considered a film already in production.
The biggest change will be the timeline. Rancho, Farhan and Raju will no longer be students, allowing the sequel to explore adulthood, careers, families and the pressures that come with middle age. The shift could give Hirani and his team an opportunity to examine how the ambitions and choices of the three friends have affected their lives over the two decades since the original film.
The possibility of a sequel also offers a reason to revisit how carefully the original 3 Idiots was made. The 2009 film was not shot in chronological order. Its present-day portions were filmed first, followed by the college sequences, helping the actors achieve the younger appearance required for the story. Aamir Khan, already an established star at the time, underwent extensive preparation to convincingly portray a college student.
The casting could have looked very different as well. Shah Rukh Khan was Hirani’s first choice for Rancho, but scheduling issues prevented him from taking the role. Aamir Khan eventually played Rancho, with Madhavan and Joshi joining him as Farhan and Raju. Arshad Warsi was considered for either of the two supporting roles, while John Abraham and Saif Ali Khan were also reportedly approached.
Even the fictional college seen in 3 Idiots was not entirely what it appeared to be. Imperial College of Engineering was largely filmed at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The production explored several locations before settling on the campus that would become such a recognisable part of the film’s visual identity.
The original film also generated some unusual production stories. During the drunken terrace sequence, Aamir Khan suggested that the actors actually drink to make their performances more convincing. The multiple takes eventually exhausted the available film stock, forcing the crew to arrange additional stock before production could continue. Another unexpected detail concerns the flying invention created by Joy Lobo: producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra credited Dia Mirza with bringing the idea for the helicopter-like device to the team.
3 Idiots also had several real-life connections behind its fictional story. The film was inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, while Rancho’s criticism of engineers moving into banking has an interesting parallel with Bhagat’s own journey from engineering to management and eventually banking. The character Phunsukh Wangdu was also inspired by Ladakhi innovator Sonam Wangchuk.
Those elements, combined with the film’s performances and filmmaking, helped 3 Idiots become more than a conventional college comedy. Now, with Hirani developing a story about the trio two decades later, the sequel has the opportunity to explore how friendship, ambition and personal choices change with age.
For now, the story remains on the page. The return of Rancho, Farhan and Raju could give the much-loved film world a new chapter without simply repeating the original. The real challenge will be showing how the three friends have changed over 20 years while keeping their bond believable. For now, that answer remains in Hirani’s script.
