Alpha Begins Streaming on Netflix, Bringing YRF’s Female-Led Spy Film to Audiences

Alpha Starts Streaming on Netflix: Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s YRF Spy Film
August 28, 2026

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s action thriller Alpha has begun streaming on Netflix today, August 28, 2026, following its theatrical release on July 3. Directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Yash Raj Films, the film is the first female-led chapter in the YRF Spy Universe and features Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Dia Mirza in key roles.

The Netflix premiere arrives nearly two months after Alpha opened in cinemas. Written by Uday Chopra, the film brings Alia Bhatt and Sharvari together as its leading stars and expands Yash Raj Films’ long-running spy franchise with a story centred on a secret military programme, highly trained agents and an experimental serum. Netflix announced the streaming release on August 27, confirming that the film would be available from August 28.

For Alpha, the move to streaming represents the next stage of a journey that began after its theatrical release was delayed more than once. The film was originally scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 25, 2025, before its release plans changed and it eventually opened on July 3, 2026. Reports attributed the delay to additional visual-effects work.

At the centre of the story is Sita, played by Alia Bhatt, who becomes connected to a highly secretive programme designed to create and train exceptional soldiers. Sharvari plays Durga Kaul, while Bobby Deol appears as Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat. Anil Kapoor and Dia Mirza also play key roles as the story explores the people and institutions behind the programme.

The film is particularly notable for placing two women at the front of the YRF Spy Universe, a franchise previously built around major stars and characters from films including Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War and Pathaan. Alpha is described as the seventh instalment in the expanding universe, giving the franchise a new pair of central characters while continuing its focus on espionage and large-scale action.

Shiv Rawail took charge of the film after directing the Netflix series The Railway Men, while Yash Raj Films backed the project as part of its larger spy franchise. The theatrical campaign also attracted attention because Alpha marked Alia Bhatt’s entry into the universe and gave Sharvari one of the biggest roles of her career.

Its theatrical run, however, produced a more mixed result. According to figures reported by Mint, the film grossed about ₹99.10 crore during its theatrical run. Cinema Express separately reported a worldwide gross of ₹98.6 crore, illustrating slight differences between box-office trackers and published totals. The film also received mixed reviews, with attention divided between its performances, action sequences and screenplay.

That makes the Netflix release an important new opportunity for Alpha. Its streaming premiere allows the film to reach viewers who may have missed its theatrical run while giving existing fans of the YRF Spy Universe another way to revisit its story. The digital launch also places the film before a much wider home audience, where its action-driven plot and franchise connections can find fresh attention.

The timing is also significant for viewers following the Yash Raj Films universe. With Alpha now available online, audiences can more easily explore how the film fits into the wider world of the studio’s spy stories and its growing collection of characters. Its arrival also gives Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s partnership a new stage after their first major collaboration together.

For Yash Raj Films, Alpha remains an important experiment within one of Hindi cinema’s biggest film franchises. Whether audiences discovered it in theatres or are encountering it for the first time on Netflix, the streaming release ensures that the film’s journey continues beyond the big screen.

Now, with its August 28 digital debut underway, Alpha enters a new phase in which its story, characters and place within the YRF Spy Universe can be experienced by audiences from home, potentially giving the film a fresh chance to connect with viewers around the world.
