Months after reports first suggested that Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 could undergo a title change, the makers have officially confirmed the development. Aamir Khan Productions and Sunny Deol unveiled a motion poster on Tuesday announcing that the film will now release as Batwara 1947.
Along with the title reveal, the makers also confirmed the film’s theatrical release date. The period drama is now set to arrive in cinemas on August 14, 2026.
Sharing the motion poster on social media, Sunny Deol wrote, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”
The announcement officially ends months of speculation surrounding the film’s title. Interestingly, the development comes after Aamir Khan had publicly dismissed reports of a possible title change earlier this year. Addressing the rumours in March, the actor-producer had stated that the project would continue as Lahore 1947. The newly released motion poster, however, confirms that the makers have ultimately decided to move forward with a different title.
The change is significant because it shifts the focus of the film’s identity. While Lahore 1947 emphasized a specific location, Batwara 1947 directly references the Partition of India, placing the historical event at the center of the film’s marketing and positioning.
The project has been generating attention for several years, with audiences closely following developments surrounding the film’s release plans, cast, and production updates since it was first announced as Lahore 1947. Readers can revisit the earlier update on Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Lahore 1947 for additional background on the project.
The motion poster itself offers the first substantial glimpse into the film’s tone and scale. It opens with the line, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage,” before a fiery slash cuts across a map, visually evoking the division associated with Partition. The imagery then shifts to scenes of chaos, burning landscapes, fleeing crowds, and a steam train moving through the turmoil.
Sunny Deol’s character is seen running alongside the train before the teaser reveals brief glimpses of Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, and other members of the ensemble cast. The motion poster concludes with a striking image of Sunny standing with a blazing torch, while the title Batwara 1947 appears on screen.
The visuals strongly suggest that the film will place Partition-era displacement, conflict, and human resilience at the forefront of its storytelling. The title itself reinforces that direction, making the historical backdrop impossible to miss.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, the film is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The celebrated work explores themes of identity, humanity, coexistence, and displacement in the aftermath of Partition and is widely regarded as one of the most important literary works dealing with the period.
The film also marks a major reunion between Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, who previously collaborated on celebrated films such as Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak. Their partnership produced some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable commercial dramas, making this reunion one of the project’s biggest attractions.
Another major talking point is the return of Preity Zinta to the big screen. The actress features prominently in the motion poster and will be seen alongside an ensemble cast that includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol.
Adding further weight to the project is its creative team. Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman is handling the music, while veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar has written the songs. The combination of Santoshi, Sunny Deol, Aamir Khan, Rahman, and Akhtar has contributed to the film’s strong anticipation among moviegoers.
The announcement also arrives at a time when Sunny Deol continues to enjoy renewed momentum at the box office. Following the success of Gadar 2 and the release of Border 2, Batwara 1947 has emerged as one of the most closely watched Hindi films on the 2026 release calendar.
With the title now officially changed, the makers appear to be placing the film’s Partition backdrop at the center of its identity. The motion poster suggests a large-scale historical drama rooted in one of the most defining chapters of the subcontinent’s history, setting the stage for what could be one of the biggest Hindi releases of 2026.
