Batwara 1947 — Release Date: 14 August 2026. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, the film stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur. Originally announced as Lahore 1947, the film is a period drama set against the backdrop of the Partition of India and is inspired by Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
Set during the turbulent events of 1947, the story follows individuals whose lives are transformed by the division of British India and the mass migration that followed. Through the experiences of families forced to navigate uncertainty, displacement, and changing social realities, the narrative explores the human consequences of one of the most significant moments in South Asian history. At its center is Sikander Mirza and his family, whose journey unfolds amid the upheaval created by Partition, bringing together themes of identity, belonging, memory, and coexistence.
Sunny Deol leads the cast as Sikander Mirza, marking his reunion with director Rajkumar Santoshi after several notable collaborations. Preity Zinta portrays Hamida Mirza, Sikander’s wife, while veteran actor Shabana Azmi appears as Mai, a pivotal figure in the story. Karan Deol plays Javed Mirza, Ali Fazal portrays poet Nasir Kazmi, and Abhimanyu Singh appears as Yaqoob Pehalwan. The ensemble cast combines established performers with younger actors to depict multiple perspectives on a society undergoing profound change.
The film represents the first collaboration between Sunny Deol and producer Aamir Khan, while also reuniting Khan and Santoshi after their earlier successful work together. Known for directing socially and historically grounded dramas, Rajkumar Santoshi approaches the material through a large-scale production that emphasizes historical authenticity and emotional storytelling. Extensive research was undertaken to recreate the atmosphere of pre-Partition Lahore and Punjab, with production designers constructing elaborate sets inspired by the architecture, markets, and residential neighborhoods of the era.
Principal photography took place across Mumbai, Lucknow, Punjab, and Varanasi. One of the production’s most ambitious sequences recreates the migration trains associated with Partition, utilizing large-scale set construction, railway locations, and extensive crowd staging. The visual presentation is further enhanced by cinematography from Santosh Sivan and a musical score composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar.
Blending historical drama with personal storytelling, Batwara 1947 revisits a defining chapter in Indian history through the lives of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on 14 August 2026, coinciding with the Independence Day weekend.
