The co-host of Brooke and Connor Make a Podcast, Brooke Averick’s debut novel Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It is all set to be adapted into a Netflix movie. After a highly competitive bidding war, Netflix won the streaming rights to Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It. The novel has spent two weeks on The New York Times bestseller list since its release on May 26, 2026, making it one of the breakout debut novels of the year and attracting strong interest from studios looking for their next literary adaptation.
The author shared the news on Instagram with a caption that said, “Wanted to let you all know.” Fans were shocked and excited by the unexpected announcement that their favorite new novel would be adapted into a movie.
As per the official description for Averick’s book, “Phoebe Berman fears the one thing she wants the most: love. Thanks to an extremely unfortunate first kiss attempt, crippling intimacy anxiety has plagued her since she was a teen. Phoebe has so much going for her: a dream teaching job, a supportive and hilarious group of best friends, and all the romance novels a girl could want at her fingertips, but she can’t help but beat herself up over the one thing she can’t quite seem to figure out. Determined to change this, she drafts up the ultimate ‘Guide to Losing My Virginity’ checklist with the hope of finally getting laid. Suddenly, she goes from a relatively boring (basically non-existent) dating life to juggling three romantic prospects at once.”
While the novel is built around a romantic comedy premise, readers have connected with its exploration of intimacy anxiety, self-doubt, friendship, and personal growth. The book’s blend of humor, vulnerability, and romance has helped it stand out in a crowded marketplace and contributed to its rapid rise among readers. The movie is going to be produced by Elizabeth Cantillon from a script written by Book Lovers screenwriter Sarah Heyward. Podcaster and comedian Averick will also produce the project.
Brooke Averick has more than 1.5 million followers across social media platforms. She is also the co-host of TMG Studios’ talk show Brooke and Connor Make a Podcast alongside Connor Wood and previously hosted her own solo podcast, Obsessed with Brooke Averick. Her established audience across podcasting and social media helped generate strong awareness for the novel ahead of its publication.
Cantillon is also attached to produce upcoming adaptations of Kristin Hannah’s bestseller The Nightingale and Ali Hazelwood’s best selling BookTok phenomenon The Love Hypothesis, two of the most anticipated literary adaptations currently in development. Previously, Cantillon served as an executive at Sony, where she oversaw films including entries in the James Bond franchise, The Social Network, Captain Phillips, and Eat Pray Love.
Sarah Heyward is currently writing an original feature for Amelia Dimoldenberg, Gloria Sanchez, and Orion. She recently completed the screenplay for the adaptation of Emily Henry’s popular novel Book Lovers for Tango Entertainment. On the television side, Heyward is writing Sweet Valley High for Paramount+ and serves as a co-executive producer on Season 3 of Netflix’s Nobody Wants This.
The announcement has generated considerable excitement among readers, podcast listeners, and fans of contemporary romance fiction. No additional details have been revealed beyond the confirmation that the book is being adapted into a Netflix movie. Further information regarding the cast, director, production schedule, and release date is yet to be announced.
