Focus Features has acquired the U.S. and multiple international distribution rights to Elsinore, the upcoming Ian Charleson biopic starring Andrew Scott and Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, according to Variety. The acquisition follows a competitive bidding war among several studios after the film generated strong early buzz, with the studio now eyeing a fall release and a festival launch as part of its awards campaign.

Last week, reports began circulating that Simon Stone’s Elsinore had quickly emerged as one of the most talked-about titles heading into awards season. The film reportedly attracted interest from every major fall festival, sparking an intense bidding war among distributors. Variety reports that programmers from Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and the New York Film Festival are all said to be circling the project, although its world premiere has yet to be announced. Sources who have already seen the film have also been highly enthusiastic, with Andrew Scott’s performance receiving widespread praise and early awards attention.

Written by Stephen Beresford and directed by Simon Stone, Elsinore stars Scott as acclaimed Scottish actor Ian Charleson, best known for portraying Eric Liddell in the Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire. Rather than covering his entire life, the biopic focuses on the final months of Charleson’s life as he delivered his celebrated 1989 stage performance as Hamlet while privately battling AIDS. Charleson continued performing despite his illness and died in January 1990 at the age of 40, only weeks after the production concluded.

Scott, who is also an Emmy and Golden Globe nominee for Ripley and a BAFTA-nominated actor for All of Us Strangers, also serves as a producer on the film. Earlier this year, he appeared in the Focus Features-backed war drama Pressure.

Olivia Colman stars as the doctor who cared for Charleson during his illness, while the supporting cast includes Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Joe Locke, Luke Thompson, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson, Adeel Akhtar, Matthew Beard, David Dawson, Kadiff Kirwan, Dickie Beau, and Peter Mullan. Piper’s performance has also reportedly drawn strong praise from those who have seen the film.

Alongside Scott, Elsinore is produced by Andrea Occhipinti of Lucky Red, Gaby Tana of Magnolia Mae Films, Pete Shilaimon and Mickey Liddell of LD Entertainment, Stefano Massenzi, and Carolyn Marks Blackwood.

The film is backed by StudioCanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red, and Magnolia Mae Films, with principal photography taking place across the U.K. earlier this year. The creative team also includes cinematographer Mike Eley and editor Valerio Bonelli.

The acquisition further strengthens Focus Features’ awards-season slate, which already includes the breakout horror hit Obsession from debut filmmaker Curry Barker, a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Robert Eggers’ gothic horror Werwulf, and Paul Greengrass’ The Uprising, led by Andrew Garfield and Jamie Bell.

With Elsinore now joining the lineup and festival plans expected to be announced in the coming months, the Andrew Scott-led drama is already shaping up to be one of the studio’s biggest prestige releases of the year.
