A Norwegian zombie comedy has walked away with the biggest prize at one of the film industry’s key genre markets. Grandmonster, directed by Vegard Dahle, won the top Outpost Award at the Fantasia Festival’s Frontieres Co-Production Market, which handed out its awards at a closing event on July 25.
The film follows an aimless young woman who returns to her home island to look after her grandmother, who is dealing with dementia. She ends up joining an illegal experiment that uses jellyfish stem cells in an attempt to reverse aging, but the experiment goes wrong and accidently triggers a zombie outbreak among the elderly residents of a remote nursing home. From there, the story becomes as much about the outbreak itself as it is about the frustrating healthcare system standing in the way of stopping it.
The idea behind the film, Vegard Dahle explained that the story is not really about the zombies at all. “The scariest part of Grandmonster isn’t the zombies, it’s watching someone you love gradually disappear,” he said. “We use zombie horror as a metaphor for dementia, and as a vehicle for satire about a healthcare system that treats the elderly as a liability rather than a legacy”.
Vegard Dahle and producer Jon Vatne presented the project at a day-long pitching event on July 22, appearing in matching sweaters and using a deadpan, self-deprecating sense of humor throughout their pitch. The approach clearly worked, drawing a loud, laughter-filled response from the packed room of fellow filmmakers, buyers, and industry delegates in attendance.
The Frontieres Co-Production Market is one of the more well-known genre focused markets in the film industry, held every year alongside the Fantasia Festival. This year’s edition brought together around 300 delegates from 24 countries, including teams behind projects in its Official Selection, along with its Genre Lab, Shorts To Features, and Music strands.
Fantasia is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, running from July 16 to August 2 in Montreal. Founded in 1996, it has grown into one of the world’s most well-known genre film festivals, drawing more than 100,000 attendees annually and building a strong reputation as a launchpad for horror and genre titles that go on to land major theatrical or streaming deals. The Frontières is now officially partnered with both the Cannes Marché du Film and the Berlin European Film Market, making it a genuine international deal-making hub rather than just a local pitching event.
Along with Grandmonster’s top prize of CAD$15,000 in post-production services, several other projects were also recognized at the ceremony. Reset and Sea Spirits each received Outpost Special Mention Awards worth CAD$5,000 in post-production services. The PurpleDOG award for an Official Selection project went to Cher, while the PurpleDOG award in the GEMS category went to Wifey. Meanwhile, the project Eternal Valley earned an invitation to pitch at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival this coming October.
This isn’t the first time Grandmonster has caught the industry’s attention. The project previously won the Fiction Norway pitching award at the Tromso Film Festival, and was also selected as a winner at the Sitges FanPitch event in 2025, which helps connect genre filmmakers with industry figures ahead of major festivals. The film is being produced by Norway’s Syden Pictures, with Bente Maalen and Havard Wettland Gosse also credited as producers on the project.
With another major win now added to its growing list of industry recognitions, Grandmonster looks to be one of the more closely watched genre projects coming out of Norway, blending dark comedy with a surprisingly personal story about aging, family, and the systems meant to care for the elderly.
