Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are set to headline Michael Mann’s long-awaited Heat 2, with principal photography expected to begin in November, according to an exclusive report by TheWrap. While multiple sources told the publication that the project is finally moving forward after more than a year of negotiations, Amazon MGM Studios said no deals have been officially finalized.
According to TheWrap, DiCaprio is set to play Chris Shiherlis, the skilled thief portrayed by Val Kilmer in the 1995 original, while Bale will take on the role of relentless LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, originally played by Al Pacino. Two sources told the outlet that both actors’ deals are already complete, while two others said negotiations are in their final stages and expected to close soon. An Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson, however, maintained that no agreements have been finalized.
The report also says Adam Driver is deep in negotiations to play the film’s primary antagonist, Wardell, while Stephen Graham is in talks to portray a younger Neil McCauley, the master thief originally played by Robert De Niro. Casting is also underway for Sharlene, the character played by Ashley Judd in the original film, with several actresses reportedly in contention for the role.
Michael Mann will return to write and direct Heat 2, adapting the 2022 novel he co-authored with Meg Gardiner. Rather than serving as a conventional sequel, the story functions as both a prequel and a sequel, unfolding across multiple timelines before and after the events of the 1995 crime classic. The novel expands the stories of Vincent Hanna, Neil McCauley, and Chris Shiherlis while introducing several new characters central to the narrative.
Released in 1995, Heat is widely regarded as one of the defining crime films of modern cinema. Written and directed by Michael Mann, the film famously brought Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together on screen for the first time, alongside a cast that included Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ted Levine, Dennis Haysbert, Natalie Portman, and Danny Trejo. Produced on a reported $60 million budget, the film earned approximately $187 million worldwide before becoming one of the genre’s most enduring modern classics.
For DiCaprio, Heat 2 would mark his first collaboration with Mann, adding another acclaimed filmmaker to a résumé that already includes Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Paul Thomas Anderson. Bale would also be working with Mann for the first time, stepping into one of Al Pacino’s most iconic roles. The project would also mark the first time DiCaprio and Bale have shared the screen in a feature film.
The project has undergone a lengthy development process. Mann had originally been developing Heat 2 at Warner Bros., but the studio reportedly stepped away over budget concerns after costs approached $200 million. Amazon MGM Studios later acquired the project, with the budget reportedly reduced to around $170 million. The production has also secured nearly $40 million in California tax incentives. Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt are producing, while Shane Salerno and Eric Roth are serving as executive producers.
If negotiations conclude as expected, Heat 2 is set to begin filming in November, with additional casting announcements expected before cameras roll. Until then, Amazon MGM Studios has not officially confirmed the cast, despite the project appearing to move closer to production.
