The 57th International Film Festival of India is scheduled to take place in Goa from November 20 to 28, 2026. IFFI is one of India’s major film festivals, bringing filmmakers, films and audiences together while giving Indian and international cinema a platform to be seen and discussed.
Indian cinema is much bigger than the films that arrive in theatres with major stars and huge promotions. Across the country, filmmakers are making independent films, documentaries and regional-language stories that may not always receive the same attention. One important platform that brings some of these films into the spotlight is Indian Panorama, a key section of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
For filmmakers hoping to put their work before a major festival audience, the deadline is almost here. Entries for Indian Panorama 2026 must be submitted by August 10, 2026, at 6 PM. The deadline is for submitting films for consideration. At the same time, IFFI 2026 has also opened its International Cinema entries, inviting filmmakers from across the world to submit their films for the 57th edition of the festival. International filmmakers can submit their entries until August 31, 2026, while the section will feature competitions including the Main International Competition, the Competition for the Best Debut Feature Film of a Director and the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal.
But what exactly is Indian Panorama? For someone unfamiliar with film festivals, the name can sound complicated. It is a special section of IFFI created to showcase notable Indian films.
Indian cinema comes from many languages, regions and filmmaking traditions. A film made in Malayalam can tell a very different story from one made in Marathi, Tamil, Bengali or Manipuri. There are also filmmakers working outside the mainstream system, creating documentaries and smaller independent films. Indian Panorama gives selected films from this wider world of Indian cinema a place within IFFI.
The section was introduced in 1978 and has since become one of the festival’s important components. For the 57th IFFI, Indian Panorama will feature 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films.
The 2026 call covers Feature Films, Non-Feature Films and the Best Debut Director category. Feature films are longer narrative films made as complete cinematic works. Non-feature films cover filmmaking outside the conventional feature-film format and can include documentaries and other eligible works.
The Best Debut Director category brings another interesting opportunity into focus. A debut director is someone making their first film as a director. Recognition at a major festival can be particularly meaningful for a filmmaker at the beginning of a career, giving their work a chance to be noticed alongside films from more established names. For 2026, five films will be nominated for the Best Debut Director of an Indian Feature Film Award.
Indian Panorama matters because it helps show audiences that Indian cinema extends far beyond mainstream commercial releases. Established filmmakers, independent creators, documentary filmmakers, regional-language filmmakers and emerging directors can all find the section relevant, provided their films meet the applicable rules and eligibility requirements.
However, submitting a film is only the first step. Every entry goes through the festival’s selection process, and submission does not guarantee selection. Filmmakers also need to follow the official requirements, including the specified submission materials and technical rules.
With the August 10 deadline at 6 PM approaching, filmmakers who want their work considered for Indian Panorama 2026 have little time left to complete their submissions. For some, it may be another festival entry. For others, it could be an important opportunity to place their film before a wider audience and bring attention to a story that might otherwise remain unseen.
