Oscar Nominations 2025: A Historic Milestone

The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced and this year it’s all about breaking new ground. Top contenders feature films such as Emilia Pérez, which leads the pack with 13 nominations, artistically portraying the journey of a transitioning cartel leader, alongside other major films like Wicked and The Brutalist.

A Breakthrough in Representation

A standout highlight this year is the monumental nomination of Karla Sofía Gascón for her role in Emilia Pérez, making her the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category. Similarly, Demi Moore’s performance in The Substance has been critically acclaimed for shedding light on the complexities and strengths of older women in the industry.

Netflix’s Historical Moment

Adding another layer to this groundbreaking year is the remarkable achievement by Netflix. For the first time, three of its films – Emilia Pérez, Maria, and The Only Girl in the Orchestra – have been nominated for Best Picture. If any of these films clinch the award, it would mark Netflix’s maiden win in the prestigious Best Picture category, signifying a major shift in the industry’s openness to streaming platforms.

Stellar Performances in the Spotlight

Timothée Chalamet, known for his roles in Dune and Wonka, has been nominated for Best Actor for his transformative performance as Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He faces stiff competition from fellow nominees Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). Stan’s nomination is particularly noteworthy as the film, a Donald Trump biopic, faced significant distribution challenges due to its controversial subject matter.

Demi Moore’s comeback continues to gain momentum with her Best Actress nomination for The Substance, a subversive horror film that critiques the movie industry’s sexism and ageism. Karla Sofía Gascón’s historical nomination for Emilia Pérez is complemented by nominations for Mikey Madison (Anora), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

Supporting Roles Shining Bright

Kieran Culkin, known for his role in Succession, earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his emotionally complex performance in A Real Pain. He is joined by Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Yura Borisov (Anora), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).

Zoe Saldaña, best known for her blockbuster roles in Avatar, showcased her versatility as an idealistic lawyer in Emilia Pérez, earning a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Her competitors include Ariana Grande (Wicked), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).

Directors Making Waves

Brady Corbet, who faced numerous challenges to bring The Brutalist to the screen, has been nominated for Best Director. He is up against Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Sean Baker (Anora), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown). Each of these directors has showcased their multifaceted talents, being recognized for multiple roles, including writing, editing, and producing.

Industry Giants and Indie Triumphs

Universal, along with its indie label Focus, dominates the nominations with 25 nods, driven by Wicked and Conclave. Netflix follows closely with 16 nominations for its powerhouse films, including Emilia Pérez. A24, known for its bold and unconventional choices, garnered 14 nominations, largely due to The Brutalist.
