The next chapter of one of modern cinema’s most beloved family franchises is officially moving forward, with Paddington 4 assembling a new creative team that could take the series in an intriguing new direction.

According to multiple reports, Emmy-winning writer Armando Iannucci has signed on to co-write the screenplay for the fourth Paddington film alongside longtime collaborator Simon Blackwell, while Dougal Wilson is currently in talks to return as director following his work on Paddington in Peru.

The announcement marks a major creative development for the franchise, particularly because of Iannucci’s reputation for sharp political satire and sophisticated comedy writing through projects such as Veep, The Thick of It, In the Loop, and The Death of Stalin.

Blackwell, meanwhile, has frequently collaborated with Iannucci across several acclaimed comedy projects, including Veep, In the Loop, and The Personal History of David Copperfield.

The pairing instantly generated widespread industry and online discussion because of the contrast between Iannucci’s biting satirical voice and Paddington’s famously wholesome tone. Social media reactions quickly joked about the idea of the polite marmalade-loving bear entering an Iannucci-style political universe, with some users humorously comparing the setup to “Paddington meets The Death of Stalin.”

Still, the move could represent a strategic creative refresh for the franchise following the somewhat more mixed critical response to Paddington in Peru compared to the universally adored first two films directed by Paul King.

The original Paddington films became a rare modern series that achieved both major box office success and extraordinary critical acclaim. The first three films have collectively grossed more than $800 million worldwide, turning the character into one of the most successful British family franchises of the modern era.

In particular, Paddington 2 achieved near-universal acclaim and famously maintained a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score for years, helping cement the series as one of the most critically respected family franchises in contemporary cinema.

The third installment, Paddington in Peru, released in 2024 and marked Wilson’s feature directorial debut after years directing acclaimed commercials and music videos. The filmmaker was previously known for directing several iconic British advertising campaigns, including the hugely popular John Lewis Christmas commercials, as well as music videos for artists such as Coldplay, LCD Soundsystem, and Goldfrapp.

Although Paddington in Peru received slightly softer reviews compared to the earlier entries, the film still performed strongly commercially, grossing approximately $211 million worldwide. The film also became a major box office success in the United Kingdom, recording the biggest opening weekend for a British film since No Time to Die.

Wilson’s possible return suggests StudioCanal remains confident in the filmmaker’s handling of the franchise despite the inevitable comparisons to Paul King’s first two entries. The studio appears to be balancing continuity with creative reinvention by combining Wilson’s visual sensibility with Iannucci and Blackwell’s comedy background.

The Paddington franchise itself has evolved into far more than just a successful film series. Beyond the movies, the character has become a major cultural figure in Britain through television projects, a West End musical, merchandise, and even the widely celebrated sketch featuring Elizabeth II sharing tea with Paddington during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Industry observers believe the hiring of Iannucci and Blackwell could indicate a desire to restore some of the emotional sharpness and inventive humor that made the first two Paddington films so widely celebrated among critics and audiences alike.

At the moment, plot details for Paddington 4 remain undisclosed, and the project has not yet announced a production start date. However, reports suggest StudioCanal is targeting a theatrical release sometime around 2027 or 2028.

With one of modern family cinema’s most acclaimed franchises now bringing in one of television and film comedy’s most respected satirical writers, Paddington 4 has already become one of the industry’s most unexpectedly fascinating franchise developments.

Variety first reported the news.
