The Indian box office witnessed a mixed weekend as Ram Charan’s Peddi retained the No. 1 position at the Indian box office, but the film’s second-weekend performance signaled a significant slowdown after its blockbuster opening weekend, while several new releases entered the marketplace without delivering a major breakthrough. Among the newcomers, Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past emerged as the strongest performer, while Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai continued to struggle to meet expectations.
Despite facing competition from fresh releases, Peddi managed to top the weekend chart. The sports-action drama collected ₹22.45 crore during its second weekend, taking its India net total to approximately ₹216 crore. The film earned ₹5.15 crore on Friday, followed by ₹8.10 crore on Saturday and ₹9.20 crore on Sunday.
While those numbers were enough to comfortably secure the No. 1 position, they also indicate that the film’s momentum has slowed significantly compared to its explosive opening week. Nevertheless, Peddi remains one of the biggest Telugu hits of 2026 and has already crossed ₹366 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing South Indian film of the year so far. For director Buchi Babu Sana and star Ram Charan, the film continues to get some momentum despite the sharper second-weekend decline.
The picture is less encouraging for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The romantic comedy managed ₹6.85 crore during its second weekend, collecting ₹1.85 crore on Friday, ₹2.25 crore on Saturday and ₹2.75 crore on Sunday. Its total now stands at approximately ₹44 crore India net.
Given its commercial positioning, star cast, and release scale, the film’s performance has largely fallen below industry expectations. While it has crossed ₹60 crore worldwide, the film has struggled to generate the kind of audience enthusiasm typically associated with mainstream Bollywood entertainers. At its current pace, it is expected to finish well below the projections many trade observers had predicted before release.
Among the new arrivals, Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past emerged as the weekend’s biggest winner. The horror film collected ₹9.35 crore in its opening weekend, outperforming several higher-profile competitors like Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga and reaffirming the strength of the horror genre in Indian cinemas. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film benefited from audience curiosity and genre appeal, giving exhibitors a much-needed fresh success story.
Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga opened to ₹5.50 crore in its first weekend, a modest start for a film backed by a combination of acclaimed talent both in front of and behind the camera. Led by Diljit Dosanjh and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, the film arrived with strong reviews and considerable goodwill among cinephiles. Critics have praised its emotional depth, performances, and Imtiaz Ali’s return to intimate, human-centered storytelling. However, the positive reception did not translate into a major opening weekend, suggesting that the film may need sustained word-of-mouth support to find a wider audience. The coming weekdays will be crucial in determining whether audiences embrace the film in the way critics largely have.
Political drama Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata opened to ₹4.25 crore during its first weekend. The film arrived with considerable attention due to its politically charged subject matter and the involvement of Kangana Ranaut, but the opening numbers fell short of expectations in a crowded marketplace. While the film generated discussion around its themes and performances, it will now depend heavily on word-of-mouth and weekday stability to improve its theatrical prospects. With competition from holdover releases and multiple new arrivals, sustaining momentum beyond the opening week could prove challenging.
Meanwhile, Governor, starring Manoj Bajpayee, collected ₹3.45 crore in its opening weekend. The political drama targeted a more niche audience compared to mainstream commercial releases and earned praise in some quarters for its performances and storytelling approach. However, its modest opening suggests that the film faces an uphill battle at the box office. The coming weekdays will be crucial in determining whether positive audience reception can translate into stronger occupancy and a longer theatrical run.
Hollywood releases also found a place in the weekend rankings. Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day collected ₹6.40 crore in India, emerging as the strongest international release of the frame. The film debuted at No. 1 globally with a worldwide opening of approximately $92.8 million, supported by a strong $44 million launch in North America and nearly $49 million from international markets. In India, most of its business came from premium screens and major metropolitan centers.
Meanwhile, horror sensation Backrooms opened at ₹3.46 crore in India while continuing its phenomenal global run. Directed by YouTube creator Kane Parsons, the film has already grossed approximately $262 million worldwide and recently became the highest-grossing release in A24’s history. While its Indian numbers remain modest, the film continues to attract younger audiences familiar with the viral internet phenomenon that inspired it.
Overall, the weekend belonged to Peddi, even if the film’s pace has clearly moderated after its blockbuster opening week. At the same time, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai remains one of the more disappointing performers among recent Bollywood releases, while Haunted 3D emerged as the strongest newcomer in a crowded market.
