More than four decades after Stephen King helped introduce Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead to a wider audience, the two horror icons are finally collaborating on a feature film. Searchlight Pictures is developing a new adaptation of King’s 1996 novel Desperation, with Raimi producing through his Ghost House Pictures banner. The project marks the first time the filmmaker has worked behind the scenes on an adaptation of King’s work.
Based on King’s bestselling novel, Desperation follows a group of strangers who become trapped in a remote Nevada desert town after an ancient evil takes control of the community. The official logline describes a group of travellers stranded in an isolated town where a possessed police officer turns routine arrests into a desperate fight for survival as a supernatural force threatens to escape beyond the town’s borders.
Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are attached to direct the adaptation from a screenplay by Ryan Brennan. The filmmaking duo first crossed paths as contestants on Steven Spielberg’s reality series On the Lot before going on to direct the acclaimed sci-fi thriller Freaks and Disney’s live-action Kim Possible. They are also attached to co-write Gremlins 3, further expanding their slate of genre projects.
Alongside directing, Lipovsky and Stein will also produce the film, with Romel Adam and Jose Canas serving as executive producers. Raimi is producing through Ghost House Pictures alongside his longtime producing partner Robert Tapert, while Searchlight Pictures is overseeing the project’s development.
Although Raimi previously made a brief cameo in the television adaptation of King’s The Stand, Desperation marks the first time the filmmaker has collaborated creatively on one of the author’s stories. The partnership is particularly notable given the long-standing admiration the two have expressed for each other’s work over the years.
Their connection dates back to the earliest days of Raimi’s career. While The Evil Dead was still struggling to find an audience, King attended a screening of the film at the Cannes market and later praised it in Twilight Zone magazine. Raimi has often credited King’s endorsement with helping the low-budget horror film gain wider recognition, laying the foundation for what would eventually become one of horror cinema’s most influential franchises.
Speaking earlier this year while promoting Send Help, Raimi recalled how stunned he was that King—whom he described as his biggest hero—had championed the film at a time when few others had. Their long-awaited collaboration on Desperation therefore represents a full-circle moment for two of the genre’s most influential figures.
This will not be the first screen adaptation of Desperation. A television version, Stephen King’s Desperation, premiered on ABC in 2006. Directed by longtime King collaborator Mick Garris, the adaptation starred Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, Steven Weber, and Annabeth Gish, with King writing the screenplay himself.
Raimi most recently directed and produced Send Help for 20th Century Studios and has continued to build Ghost House Pictures into one of horror’s most established production banners, with credits including the Evil Dead franchise and 30 Days of Night.
With Searchlight bringing together one of horror’s most celebrated filmmakers and one of its most influential authors for the first time, Desperation becomes one of the most notable Stephen King adaptations currently in development. No release date has been announced.
