Sony Pictures has added Callan Farris, Lexi Minetree and Josh Macqueen to Narcs, completing the principal cast of its upcoming coming-of-age comedy. Farris will take the third lead role alongside previously announced stars Mason Thames and Ella Bright, bringing the film’s main cast into place ahead of its planned theatrical release. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on August 20, 2027, although Sony has yet to reveal its storyline or the characters the actors will portray. The project also marks a significant career step for writer John Phillips, who is set to make his feature directorial debut.
The latest casting additions bring together performers whose recent credits span film and television. Farris has appeared in the horror film Grimcutty and the Disney Channel series Gabby Duran & The Unsittables. Lexi Minetree, meanwhile, recently took on the title role in Elle, Prime Video’s prequel to Legally Blonde, portraying a younger Elle Woods before the events of the 2001 film. Josh Macqueen is attached to the upcoming drama Thunder Road, adding another name to an ensemble whose individual roles in Narcs have not yet been disclosed.
Narcs is being directed by Phillips, whose writing credits include the R-rated comedies No Hard Feelings, Good Boys and Dirty Grandpa. The move into directing marks his feature directorial debut, bringing a new responsibility to a filmmaker whose previous work has been associated with comedy screenwriting. Sony has described Narcs as a coming-of-age comedy but has not shared further details about its tone, central relationships or narrative. The extent to which the film combines humour with the challenges of adolescence therefore remains unclear.
The screenplay has also involved several writers during its development. Jordan and Justin Shipley, the duo behind the TBS comedy series Wrecked, wrote the original script. Phillips subsequently worked on a rewrite alongside Gene Stupnitsky, a frequent collaborator whose comedy credits include Good Boys and No Hard Feelings. Stupnitsky is also producing Narcs through his Big Name Entertainment banner. The writing and producing team brings together filmmakers with experience in comedy, although the details of their approach to this particular story have not been made public.
The absence of plot information remains one of the defining aspects of the casting announcement. Sony has not released character descriptions or a storyline, and the announcement does not explain what the title Narcs refers to in the context of the film. As a result, the confirmed details remain focused on the genre, cast, creative personnel and planned theatrical release date. The lack of an official premise also means that the actors’ roles and the relationships between their characters cannot yet be described in greater detail without relying on speculation.
Mason Thames and Ella Bright remain the previously announced leads, while Farris joins them in a third lead role. Minetree and Macqueen complete the principal ensemble, although the studio has not identified the characters any of them will play. Further announcements may clarify how the five performers fit into the story, but no official character breakdown is currently available. For now, the August 20, 2027 theatrical date provides a confirmed point on the film’s release schedule while details about its narrative remain under wraps.
The completed principal cast brings Narcs another step forward as the project moves towards its planned theatrical debut. Phillips leads the creative team as director, working from a screenplay that began with Jordan and Justin Shipley and later received a rewrite by Phillips and Stupnitsky. The project’s comedy credentials are evident in the credited writers’ previous work, but its specific premise and approach to the coming-of-age genre remain undisclosed. The next substantial update from Sony may provide a clearer picture of the story or reveal the roles assigned to the cast. Until then, the addition of Farris, Minetree and Macqueen remains the central confirmed development ahead of the film’s scheduled August 20, 2027 release.
