Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has set another major box-office record, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time after surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine. The epic has now grossed approximately $1.352 billion worldwide, moving ahead of the 2024 Marvel blockbuster’s $1.338 billion global finish. The milestone gives Nolan’s film another significant achievement in a theatrical run that has already established it as one of the biggest releases of 2026.
The new record is particularly notable because The Odyssey is not a conventional superhero franchise entry. The film is a nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, directed by Nolan and led by Matt Damon as Odysseus. Its cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page and Himesh Patel. The film’s commercial performance has therefore extended beyond the audience traditionally associated with R-rated comic-book blockbusters.
The Odyssey opened in theaters on July 17 and launched with approximately $123 million domestically. Its worldwide opening weekend reached more than $264 million, giving the film a strong starting point before its subsequent run continued to build. The current domestic total stands at approximately $516.3 million, while international markets have contributed more than $835 million. The overseas business is therefore responsible for the larger share of the film’s worldwide gross.
The performance is also another career milestone for Nolan. The Odyssey has now become the filmmaker’s highest-grossing movie worldwide, moving beyond The Dark Knight Rises, which had previously been his biggest global release at approximately $1.085 billion. The result follows Oppenheimer, which came close to the $1 billion mark despite being an R-rated historical drama, and further demonstrates the director’s ability to turn original or non-franchise material into major theatrical events.
There is an important distinction between the two records, however. Deadpool & Wolverine remains one of the strongest openings ever recorded for an R-rated movie and benefited from the enormous established audience around the Deadpool and Wolverine characters. Its eventual $1.338 billion worldwide total made it the highest-grossing R-rated film after it surpassed Joker, which had previously held the record with approximately $1.079 billion. The Odyssey has now moved past both films.
That makes The Odyssey only the third R-rated film to cross the $1 billion worldwide threshold, following Joker and Deadpool & Wolverine. It is also notable that Nolan himself had already demonstrated the commercial potential of an R-rated film with Oppenheimer. That film became a major global hit in 2023, ultimately approaching $1 billion worldwide. The Odyssey has now taken that performance considerably further.
One of the most important elements of the film’s box-office run has been premium-format exhibition, particularly IMAX. Nolan designed The Odyssey as a large-format theatrical experience, and the film became the first major studio production to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. IMAX reported on August 10 that the film had generated $289 million through its screens worldwide at that point, making it the highest-grossing IMAX release in the format’s history.
The IMAX performance is important from an exhibition perspective because it demonstrates how premium formats can play a significant role in the economics of an event film. The Odyssey was not simply sold as another summer release; its marketing and theatrical positioning emphasised the scale of the image, sound and presentation. The sustained demand for IMAX screenings helped reinforce the idea that audiences will pay a premium for films that offer an experience they cannot easily replicate at home.
The film’s reported production budget of approximately $250 million also makes its worldwide performance significant. A production budget does not translate directly into a studio’s final profit, since marketing, distribution costs and exhibitor splits are separate considerations. However, a $1.352 billion worldwide gross represents more than five times the reported production budget and puts the film firmly among the year’s major commercial successes.
The achievement also comes during a strong 2026 theatrical market. The Odyssey is currently the second-highest-grossing film of the year worldwide, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, according to current box-office reporting. That places Nolan’s film among a group of releases demonstrating that audiences continue to turn out for large-scale theatrical experiences.
The film’s success has also received recognition from its former R-rated box-office rival. Ryan Reynolds, who starred as Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine, publicly congratulated the cast and crew of The Odyssey after the film overtook the Marvel title. His response added a lighter moment to what is otherwise a significant shift in the R-rated box-office rankings.
From a trade perspective, the record is important beyond the ranking itself. The Odyssey combines a filmmaker-led original vision with a major studio budget, a challenging R rating, a long runtime and a story originating from an ancient epic. None of those factors traditionally guarantees a billion-dollar theatrical run. Yet the film has now crossed $1.35 billion and established a new benchmark for R-rated cinema.
The result also strengthens Nolan’s position as one of the few contemporary filmmakers whose name itself can function as a major theatrical draw. Following Oppenheimer, The Odyssey shows that audiences remain willing to commit to long-form, filmmaker-driven cinema when the project is positioned as a major theatrical event.
The Odyssey is still in theaters, its final worldwide total could move further beyond the $1.352 billion mark. However, the record is already clear: Christopher Nolan’s epic has overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in box-office history, adding another major milestone to an extraordinary theatrical run.
