U.S. Box Office: 'A Minecraft Movie' Powers to $280M as 'The King of Kings' Surprises at No. 2
April 14, 2025

The domestic box office surged with renewed energy this past weekend (April 12–14, 2025), led once again by Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie, which continues to dominate with unstoppable momentum. The PG-rated video game adaptation collected a massive $80.6 million in its second weekend, slipping just 50.5% from its record-breaking debut of $162.7 million. With this, the film’s 10-day domestic total now stands at $280.96 million, and $550 million globally, overtaking Captain America: Brave New World to become 2025’s highest-grossing release.

Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, Minecraft has benefited from strong weekday holds and an enthusiastic fan base. Its second-week daily grosses showed remarkable consistency — $12.7 million on Tuesday, $20.5 million on Friday, $34.4 million on Saturday, and $25.7 million on Sunday — reflecting its broad appeal and family-friendly draw.

Newcomers Deliver Mixed Results

While Minecraft held firm at the top, five new releases entered the chart with varying degrees of success.

2 – The King of Kings

Angel Studios’ animated biblical epic debuted to a strong $19.05 million across 3,200 theaters. The film, featuring the voices of Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Mark Hamill, earned an A+ CinemaScore, a rare feat achieved by just 128 films in history. Boosted by the studio’s “Kids Go Free” initiative, the film resonated strongly with faith-based audiences.

3 – The Amateur

20th Century Studios’ espionage thriller starring Rami Malek took in $15 million from 3,400 theaters. With a “B+” CinemaScore and $17.2 million internationally, its global cume stands at $32.2 million. Still, with a reported $60 million budget, the film has a long road ahead.

4 – Warfare

A24’s Warfare, co-directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, debuted to $8.3 million across 2,670 screens. Featuring rising stars D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai and Will Poulter, the war drama scored 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A-” CinemaScore, especially connecting with younger male viewers.

5 – Drop

Universal’s psychological thriller Drop, starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar, opened modestly with $7.5 million. However, given its slim $11 million budget, the film could still find profitability. Audiences gave it a “B” CinemaScore, and it holds an 83% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

6 – The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3

Continuing the momentum of the popular TV series, this limited release earned $5.8 million from 2,296 theaters, placing sixth. Despite fierce competition from The King of Kings, it maintained strong attendance thanks to a dedicated faith-based following.

Holdovers and Downward Trends

A few titles struggled this weekend. Amazon MGM’s  A Working Man fell 58.3%, grossing just $3.06 million in its third week. Disney’s Snow White dropped to eighth place with $2.8 million, and with just $81.92 million domestic, it has now become the studio’s lowest-grossing live-action remake — falling below Dumbo ($114M).

Outlook: 2025 Begins to Recover

Just two weeks ago, 2025’s total box office was 11% behind 2024 and 40% behind 2019. Now, thanks to Minecraft, the year is 0.5% ahead of 2024, though still trailing 2019 by 31%.

All eyes are now on upcoming tentpoles like Sinners, Thunderbolts, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch to see if they can sustain this upward trend.

A Minecraft Movie arrived like the cavalry,” said Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. “This is great news in the run-up to the summer movie season.”

As the summer movie season nears, A Minecraft Movie has emerged as a box office titan, setting the tone for what’s shaping up to be a strong year for theatrical releases. With fresh hits and long-awaited blockbusters on the horizon, the stage is set for a robust 2025.
