Universal Pictures has made box-office history, becoming the first studio to cross $5 billion at the 2026 global box office. The milestone, reached with $1.788 billion from domestic theaters and $3.218 billion internationally, marks only the third time Universal has crossed the figure in a calendar year, following 2015 and 2017. The extraordinary run has been powered by major releases including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, while Universal has also topped the global weekend box office for 11 weekends this year.
The $5 billion achievement puts Universal approximately 29% ahead of its final 2025 worldwide total of $3.89 billion. More importantly, the split between domestic and international markets shows how widely the studio’s 2026 slate has connected with audiences. International revenue accounts for more than three-fifths of the total, giving the milestone a distinctly global scale.
For Universal, the achievement also demonstrates that theatrical success can come from more than familiar franchise machinery. The studio has benefited from established global brands, but its year also includes a breakout original horror success, giving the overall result a balance between large-scale spectacle and films that emerged from unexpected corners of the market. That mix has made the $5 billion milestone especially notable.
Universal’s strength is especially clear in the billion-dollar club. Only five films have crossed $1 billion worldwide in 2026, and Universal distributed three of them: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael, which Universal distributed internationally. The two remaining billion-dollar titles are Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
That concentration gives Universal an unusual presence at the top of the worldwide chart. Rather than depending on one blockbuster, the studio’s total has been built across different audiences, genres and entertainment brands, creating a broader theatrical run.
At the center of the achievement is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The epic has surpassed $1.7 billion worldwide, including more than $1 billion internationally, making it Universal’s highest-grossing film ever. It also ranks as the No. 10 MPA film of all time worldwide and internationally, according to Universal’s milestone announcement.
The film’s performance has given Universal a major event movie at the same time that its other divisions have delivered hits of very different kinds. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has joined the billion-dollar club, while Michael has added another billion-dollar title through its international distribution.
The breadth becomes even clearer in the annual rankings. Universal International and Focus Features together account for five of the 10 highest-grossing films worldwide in 2026: The Odyssey at No. 2, Michael at No. 4, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at No. 5, Minions & Monsters at No. 8 and Obsession at No. 9.
Focus Features’ Obsession has been one of the year’s most unexpected theatrical stories. The low-budget horror film became the highest-grossing worldwide release in Focus Features’ history and also the highest-grossing film for Blumhouse Atomic Monster, showing how a much smaller production can contribute meaningfully alongside billion-dollar franchises.
Universal’s $5 billion achievement ultimately reflects the range of its theatrical ecosystem. Universal Pictures, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation and Focus Features have brought together event filmmaking, animation, gaming-related entertainment, biographical drama and original horror. That combination has allowed the studio to reach audiences across markets and generations.
