Dian Weys’ Vultures has won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the 2026 HollyShorts Film Festival, giving the Cannes-recognized short a qualifying route toward Academy Award consideration. The win marks another major milestone for the film following its selection at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
The HollyShorts victory is significant because the festival’s Best Short Film Grand Prize is among the awards recognized by the Academy as qualifying for Oscar consideration. However, the win does not mean that Vultures has received an Oscar nomination or is guaranteed to compete at the Academy Awards. Instead, the award gives the film a pathway to submit for Academy consideration under the applicable eligibility and selection rules.
The latest recognition adds to an increasingly prominent festival run for Weys’ fourth short film. The South African filmmaker’s first three shorts screened at more than 100 international festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs ShortFest, Tampere and ZINEBI Bilbao. His previous film, Bergie, released in 2022, won the Tanit d’Argent for Best Short Film at the Carthage Film Festival.
Vultures first attracted significant international attention at the 78th Festival de Cannes in 2025, where it was selected for the Official Short Film Competition. The film was one of 11 titles selected from 4,781 submissions, placing it among a highly competitive group of shorts at the festival.
Cannes also brought another major distinction for Weys. Vultures went on to win the Unifrance Short Film Grand Prix, giving the film an important early award during its international festival campaign.
The film’s festival journey continued in 2026 with a screening at the Tribeca Festival, where Vultures had its New York premiere. Its appearance at Tribeca further expanded the film’s presence across major international festival platforms and positioned the HollyShorts recognition as the latest achievement in an ongoing festival run.
At the 22nd HollyShorts Film Festival, which ran from August 13 to 23, 2026, Vultures collected more than one honour. In addition to the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film, the film won Best International and received a $60,000 Panavision camera package connected to its top prize.
HollyShorts is an important platform for filmmakers seeking exposure and awards recognition in the short-film space. The festival is both Academy Awards and BAFTA qualifying, allowing selected films and award winners to potentially access major awards pathways without requiring a conventional theatrical release.
For Vultures, the HollyShorts victory therefore represents more than another festival trophy. It gives the film a recognized route toward the Academy Awards while continuing a festival campaign that has already taken it from Cannes to Tribeca and now Hollywood.
