Doctor Doom Takes Center Stage as Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Brings Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four Together

August 15, 2026

Marvel Studios has unveiled a new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, giving audiences a closer look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and revealing how the film will bring together characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men. The footage was shown at Disney’s D23 fan event and marks the second trailer for the upcoming Marvel film.
Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a completely different role this time. Rather than Tony Stark, the actor plays Victor von Doom, the ruler of Latveria and the central antagonist of Avengers: Doomsday. The new footage gives greater attention to Doom’s motivations, suggesting that personal loss has played a role in shaping the character.
The trailer also establishes a potentially important connection between Doom and Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal. Their confrontation suggests that Victor’s relationship with Reed has a deeper history than a straightforward clash between a villain and a superhero. That personal connection could become one of the film’s key dramatic threads.
Doom is also shown facing Thor, with Chris Hemsworth’s character challenging him directly. The encounter ends with Doom stopping Thor’s Stormbreaker and striking him with a blast of green energy, giving the trailer an early indication of the threat he poses to some of the MCU’s most powerful heroes.
Alongside Downey Jr., the trailer features a large group of returning Marvel characters. Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi are among the Avengers characters appearing in the footage.
The Fantastic Four are represented by Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm. Members of the Thunderbolts lineup, including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman, are also part of the ensemble.
The biggest development for the X-Men storyline comes with the appearance of Sentinels, the mutant-hunting machines closely associated with the franchise. The trailer shows Doctor Doom commanding an army of Sentinels, placing the X-Men directly within the film’s central conflict alongside the Avengers and Fantastic Four.
The footage also brings back several actors from the earlier X-Men film series. Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. Their appearances give the film another major connection to Marvel’s previous screen history.
With the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men appearing within the same story, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up as one of Marvel Studios’ largest crossover projects. However, the trailer’s emphasis remains firmly on Doom, presenting him as the force that brings these different groups into the same conflict.
The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, marking the brothers’ return to the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. The screenplay is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026, and will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars.
The new trailer ultimately shifts the focus away from the size of the returning ensemble and toward the threat at its centre. With Doctor Doom commanding Sentinels and facing heroes from three major corners of Marvel’s cinematic history, the film is positioning his conflict with Earth’s heroes as a defining chapter in the MCU’s next phase.
