Citizen Vigilante is not a film that was supposed to make headlines. It opened quietly in a handful of U.S. theatres on June 19, received some of the worst reviews of the year, and looked like it was heading nowhere fast. Then Elon Musk posted the entire film on X for free, and everything changed. Within days, the film had climbed to number one on the Apple TV Store and sparked one of the most heated debates in cinema this summer.
Citizen Vigilante stars Armie Hammer as Michael Sanders, a wealthy American businessman living in an unnamed European city who grows frustrated with what he sees as a breakdown of law and order. He begins targeting immigrant criminals and corrupt government officials, turning himself into a feared and wanted vigilante. The film is written, directed, and produced by Uwe Boll, a German filmmaker who has been making provocative, low-budget genre films since the early 2000s. Alongside Hammer, the cast includes Costas Mandylor, Desiree Giorgetti, Steffen Mennekes, and others.
Before the film even opened in America, it had already run into trouble in Europe. Germany’s official film ratings board refused to give Citizen Vigilante an age rating on two separate occasions, effectively preventing it from receiving a normal release in the country. Director Uwe Boll called the decision political censorship and denied that the film carries an anti-immigrant message. He is now challenging the ruling in court.
One week after the U.S. release, Elon Musk intervened in a way nobody expected. Rather than contacting Uwe Boll directly, Musk reached out through the team behind Boll’s U.S. podcast, Uwe Boll Raw. When Boll was told about the message, his first reaction was that it must have come from a parody account. It had not. He agreed to let Musk post the film, though Boll later admitted that if he had hesitated, Musk would likely have simply moved on.
On June 25, Elon Musk posted the full film to his X account, which has more than 240 million followers, making it available to watch for free for 48 hours. The original film post received more than 5 million views, while Musk’s own repost generated over 10.5 million views.
The impact was immediate. Citizen Vigilante shot to number one on the Apple TV Store and number two on Amazon Prime Video. Quiver Distribution, which already held North American rights, subsequently acquired worldwide distribution rights, excluding the UK, German-speaking territories, South Korea, and Taiwan. Boll estimates the film has generated around $600,000 in revenue so far against a production budget of approximately $2 million.
The response to Citizen Vigilante has been sharply divided. Critics were largely negative, with Variety describing the film as violent, incoherent, and morally bankrupt. The critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes reflects that response. The audience score, however, stands at 95%, with many viewers praising the film’s political themes. The contrast between critical reviews and audience reactions has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the film.
Musk also replied to a post showing the film at number two on the Apple TV Store, writing, “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.”
The film represents Armie Hammer’s his most significant role since his career was derailed in 2021 following allegations of sexual assault and disturbing behaviour. Hammer denied the allegations, and Los Angeles prosecutors declined to file criminal charges in 2023, citing insufficient evidence. Boll was direct about why he cast Hammer, saying he believed the actor had been unfairly cancelled and that he wanted to work with him.
A sequel, Citizen Vigilante 2, has already been confirmed for 2027. Uwe Boll has ideas for the project but no completed script yet and is hoping Hammer will return. A video game tie-in, Citizen Vigilante: The Video Game, is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on July 17. Whether the sequel ultimately moves forward depends on whether the film earns enough money to fund it, something Boll says he expects to know more about in the coming weeks.
