Cameron Diaz’s Hollywood comeback is officially in full swing. Less than a year after Back in Action brought her back to screens following an 11-year hiatus, Netflix has unveiled the first look at her next film, Bad Day, an action comedy directed by Jake Szymanski and set to release on December 11, 2026. The first-look images, released on August 21, give audiences their clearest glimpse yet at what the film has in store.
The official Netflix synopsis describes Bad Day as “an action-comedy about a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life.” The premise centres on a mother, a promise and a catastrophically bad day standing between the two. The first-look images released alongside the announcement show Diaz in full action-comedy mode, alongside what appears to be a chaotic and escalating series of events unfolding around her.
Bad Day is directed by Jake Szymanski, the same filmmaker behind Back in Action, making this his second consecutive collaboration with Diaz on a Netflix action comedy. Szymanski is also known for directing Jury Duty, the critically acclaimed Amazon Freevee series. The screenplay was written by Laura Solon, who also serves as an executive producer on the film alongside Mark Moran. Beau Bauman, who produced Back in Action, returns to produce Bad Day through his Good One Productions, with Jeremy Mittleman serving as co-producer.
Alongside Diaz, the film features an ensemble cast including Danielle Brooks, Rhenzy Feliz, John Higgins, Mark Duplass, Jessica Belkin, Ed O’Neill, Rob Corddry, Ayden Mayeri, Ben Schwartz, Retta, Emma Pearson, P.J. Byrne, Sherry Cola, Edi Patterson and Beck Bennett. The first-look images include Diaz as Joy alongside Ed O’Neill as Henry and Danielle Brooks as Detective Jackson, suggesting that the increasingly chaotic day will involve encounters with law enforcement and a range of colourful personalities.
Diaz’s return to acting after an 11-year break has been one of the more notable Hollywood comeback stories of recent years. She stepped away from the industry in 2014, with her last theatrical film being Annie, citing a desire for a quieter and more private life. Her return in Back in Action, opposite Jamie Foxx, marked a significant moment, with Netflix releasing the film to a large global audience on the platform.
Bad Day is her follow-up, and the decision to reunite with the same director and continue with the Netflix action-comedy formula suggests a creative partnership that has continued beyond their first film. Szymanski and Diaz now have another opportunity to build on their previous collaboration, while the new film’s central premise gives Diaz a more emotionally grounded element around which the comedy and action can unfold.
The film arrives on Netflix on December 11, 2026, placing it in the competitive holiday streaming window when the platform traditionally releases some of its biggest original films. The December release date, combined with Diaz’s profile and the size of the supporting cast, positions Bad Day as one of Netflix’s major end-of-year releases.
With the first-look images now released and a confirmed date on the calendar, Bad Day is shaping up as one of Netflix’s notable original films for the holiday season. For Diaz, the film represents another step in her return to acting, following her comeback in Back in Action.
