The highly acclaimed family drama Fjord, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, is all set to arrive in theaters this October. Distributor Neon has scheduled the film for a theatrical release on October 9, continuing a strategy that has increasingly become synonymous with the company’s awards-season campaigns.

The release date is particularly noteworthy because it mirrors the rollout strategy Neon previously employed for Palme d’Or winners such as Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora. All three films went on to become major awards contenders, while Parasite and Anora ultimately secured the Academy Award for Best Picture. Given Neon’s remarkable track record in turning Cannes success into Oscar momentum, Fjord is already emerging as one of the most closely watched international releases of the year.

Neon acquired distribution rights to the film following its Cannes triumph and will release it across key English-language territories. The acquisition further extends one of the most extraordinary streaks in contemporary independent cinema. With Fjord, Neon now has a remarkable run of seven consecutive Palme d’Or winners, following Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Anora, and Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident. That consistency has transformed the distributor into one of the most influential players in the international awards landscape.

Written and directed by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, Fjord is a Romanian-Norwegian-Danish-Finnish-French co-production produced by Cristian Mungiu, Pascal Caucheteux, and Dyveke Bjørkly Graver. Running 146 minutes and filmed in Norway, the drama stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve in the lead roles.

The film follows a Romanian family with deeply held religious beliefs that relocates to a small village in Norway in search of a better life. Their world begins to unravel when bruises are discovered on their daughter’s body at school, prompting local authorities to intervene and remove the children from the family. What follows is a complex legal and emotional battle that examines faith, parenting, cultural identity, immigration, and the relationship between individuals and the state. The story’s emotionally charged subject matter has already generated considerable discussion among critics and festival audiences. The overwhelmingly positive reception highlighted the film’s morally complex storytelling, Mungiu’s restrained direction, and the performances of Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Long before the festival concluded, many critics had already identified Fjord as one of the strongest contenders for the Palme d’Or.

Beyond winning the festival’s highest honor, Fjord emerged as one of the most decorated titles at Cannes, collecting five awards in total. Alongside the Palme d’Or, the film received the François Chalais Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and the Prix de la Citoyenneté. Winning across multiple juries and organizations underscored the breadth of support the film received throughout the festival.

Its achievement becomes even more impressive when viewed within the context of one of Cannes’ most competitive recent editions. The festival lineup also included highly anticipated titles such as Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell and Arthur Harari’s The Unknown, both of which generated significant critical discussion throughout the event.

The success of Fjord marks another milestone for Cristian Mungiuin’s an extraordinary Cannes career. The filmmaker previously won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while also receiving the festival’s Best Screenplay award for Beyond the Hills in 2012 and the Best Director prize for Graduation in 2016. With Fjord, Mungiu becomes one of the select filmmakers in Cannes history to have won the Palme d’Or twice, further cementing his status as one of contemporary European cinema’s most respected voices.

The film also represents an important project for its lead actors. Romanian-born Sebastian Stan brings a personal connection to the material through his own heritage, while Renate Reinsve continues her impressive run of collaborations with leading European filmmakers following her breakthrough Cannes-winning performance in The Worst Person in the World. Their performances have been widely cited as two of the film’s greatest strengths.

With its October theatrical release placing it squarely in the heart of awards season, Fjord now enters the next phase of its journey. The film has already conquered Cannes, earned widespread critical acclaim, and secured the backing of a distributor with an exceptional history of awards success. Whether it can replicate the Oscar achievements of some of Neon’s previous Palme d’Or winners remains to be seen, but Fjord is already firmly established as one of the most important international films of the year.
