Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, offering fans their first look at the next chapter in the blockbuster adventure franchise. The film reunites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and the rest of the returning ensemble while introducing the series’ biggest twist yet: this time, Jumanji leaves the game behind and invades the real world.
Set for a December 25, 2026 theatrical release, Jumanji: Open World marks the third installment in Sony’s rebooted franchise, following the global success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), which together earned more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
The nearly three-minute trailer opens with an ordinary day interrupted by extraordinary chaos as a rhinoceros charges through a busy restaurant, signaling that the magical world of Jumanji has escaped its digital boundaries. From there, the footage reveals jungles overtaking city streets, dangerous wildlife roaming freely, and familiar heroes once again forced into an adventure unlike anything they’ve faced before.
Johnson returns as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, alongside Hart’s Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Black’s Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, and Gillan’s Ruby Roundhouse. The trailer also reunites the real-world characters played by Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner, while Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, and several other returning cast members also make appearances.
One of the trailer’s biggest revelations is that the avatars appear to be trapped outside the game in what is described as “demo mode,” creating another round of identity swaps and comedic confusion. As reality and the game’s fantasy world collide, the returning group must once again work together to restore order before the chaos spreads even further.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Spencer and his friends must stop the magical barrier separating Jumanji from the real world from collapsing completely. Their mission takes them across both familiar and entirely new environments as they confront dangerous creatures, unexpected challenges, and the consequences of bringing the game into reality.
Director Jake Kasdan returns to helm the sequel after directing both previous reboot films, with producers Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, and Jake Kasdan also returning behind the scenes.
The new premise represents the franchise’s most significant creative evolution since Sony reinvented Jumanji as a video game in 2017. While Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level centered on players being transported inside the game, Open World reverses that concept by bringing the game’s dangers directly into everyday life, allowing for larger-scale action sequences and raising the stakes beyond the confines of the jungle.
The Jumanji franchise remains one of Sony Pictures’ biggest theatrical success stories. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle grossed approximately $962.5 million worldwide, while Jumanji: The Next Level followed with $801.7 million, giving the rebooted series a combined global box office haul exceeding $1.76 billion. Those films successfully reimagined the beloved 1995 classic starring Robin Williams by transforming the enchanted board game into a modern video game while preserving its adventurous spirit.
Sony is positioning Jumanji: Open World as “one last game,” suggesting the film could serve as the conclusion to the current reboot trilogy. With its familiar cast, an ambitious new premise, and a release timed for the lucrative Christmas holiday corridor, the studio will be hoping the franchise can once again deliver one of the year’s biggest box office successes.
