Lea Salonga has added another landmark achievement to her career, becoming the first Filipina to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The honour was unveiled in Hollywood, Los Angeles, placing the acclaimed actress and singer among performers recognized on one of the world’s best-known entertainment landmarks. Her star, the Walk of Fame’s 2,855th, is in the Live Performance category and stands in front of the Pantages Theatre, fittingly connecting the recognition with her celebrated stage career.
The recognition is particularly meaningful because Salonga’s career has repeatedly moved between live performance and screen storytelling. From playing Kim in Miss Saigon to becoming the singing voice of two Disney characters, she has contributed to productions that reached audiences far beyond their original stages. Her Hollywood star now adds a physical marker to that journey, placing her name alongside performers whose work has shaped popular entertainment.
Before becoming an international name, Salonga had already established herself as a child performer in the Philippines, working across stage and television. Her major international breakthrough arrived with Miss Saigon, the musical that introduced her talent to audiences outside her home country. The role brought her an Olivier Award and eventually led her to Broadway, where her performance became an important part of theatre history.
When Miss Saigon opened on Broadway in 1991, Salonga played Kim, a Vietnamese woman whose life is changed by the Vietnam War. Her performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The win made Salonga the first Asian American woman to receive a Tony Award for a performance, giving her Broadway career a significance that extended beyond the production itself.
Cinema audiences would later know her through a different part of the filmmaking process: her voice. Salonga provided the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan and Mulan II. While she did not physically appear as the animated characters, her vocals became an important part of how those characters were presented on screen. Disney later named Salonga a Disney Legend, recognizing her contribution to the studio’s enduring storytelling legacy.
The location of the new star gives the honour an added theatrical connection. Positioned at 6225 Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Pantages Theatre, it places Salonga’s name near a venue associated with major musical productions in Los Angeles. For an artist whose international career was built through musical theatre, the setting makes the recognition feel closely connected to the work that established her reputation.
The Hollywood honour is not Salonga’s first star recognition. In 2006, she was inducted into the Eastwood City Walk of Fame in the Philippines. Her career has also continued across stage and screen, with Broadway appearances including Once on This Island, Here Lies Love and Allegiance, demonstrating that her work has never been limited to one form of entertainment.
What makes the Hollywood star significant is the way it brings these different chapters together. Salonga’s career has moved from Philippine television and theatre to Broadway musicals and the soundtracks of major animated films. Her work has reached audiences through performance, character and voice, allowing her to become part of stories that continue to travel across generations.
With her name now represented on Hollywood Boulevard, Salonga’s latest honour adds a new chapter to a career already closely connected with some of entertainment’s most recognizable productions. It is a milestone rooted not simply in celebrity, but in the lasting reach of performance across theatre, animation and cinema.
