June 24, 2026

Indian cinema was among the sectors recognized during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony of the Padma Awards 2026, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 23. President Droupadi Murmu presented the country’s prestigious civilian honours to several distinguished personalities, including acclaimed actors Mammootty and R. Madhavan, whose contributions to Indian cinema have spanned decades and multiple languages.
Mammootty was conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, while R. Madhavan received the Padma Shri in recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema. Playback singer Alka Yagnik was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan, while several other film personalities were among this year’s recipients.
For Mammootty, the Padma Bhushan marks another milestone in a remarkable career that has made him one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema. The Malayalam cinema legend has appeared in more than 400 films across a career spanning over five decades. Widely regarded as one of India’s finest performers, Mammootty has delivered acclaimed performances across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and English-language productions.
Over the years, he has earned multiple National Film Awards and numerous state honours while remaining a dominant presence in Malayalam cinema. Even after decades in the industry, Mammootty continues to attract audiences and critical acclaim through performances that showcase both his versatility and longevity. Family members, including actor Dulquer Salmaan, were present as he received the honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
R. Madhavan’s Padma Shri recognition reflects a career that has successfully evolved across different phases of Indian cinema. Beginning his journey on television before emerging as a leading man in Tamil cinema, Madhavan became a household name through films such as Alaipayuthey, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Tanu Weds Manu, and Vikram Vedha.
Unlike many actors who remain confined to a single industry, Madhavan built a career that crossed linguistic and regional boundaries, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu cinema. Madhavan expressed gratitude for the honour and reflected on the responsibility that accompanies such recognition. In a statement shared on social media, the actor said he was deeply humbled and profoundly grateful to receive the Padma Shri, adding that the recognition was something he would cherish for the rest of his life.

Beyond Mammootty and Madhavan, several other personalities from the entertainment industry were honoured during the ceremony. Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik received the Padma Bhushan for her contribution to Indian music. Veteran Telugu actors Murali Mohan and Rajendra Kumar were among the Padma Shri recipients, while actor Satish Shah was posthumously honoured with the Padma Shri, which was received on his behalf by family members.
The Padma Awards remain among India’s highest civilian honours and recognize exceptional contributions across fields including art, literature, public affairs, science, medicine, sports, and social work. For Indian cinema, the recognition of artists such as Mammootty and Madhavan serves as a reminder of the industry’s cultural impact and its ability to connect audiences across regions, languages, and generations.
While their careers have followed very different paths, both Mammootty and Madhavan have played significant roles in shaping contemporary Indian cinema. Their recognition at the Padma Awards 2026 celebrates not only individual achievements but also the enduring influence of Indian filmmakers, actors, and artists on the country’s cultural landscape.
