Michael J. Fox has stepped into the lead voice role in the upcoming CG animated feature Dragoons. The Back to the Future star is officially lending his voice to Dougie, an overlooked, ordinary worker at WizCorp who, after a freak accident, becomes an unlikely hero alongside his apprentice, Dart.
Per the official description, Dougie is “an overlooked, ordinary worker at WizCorp, that is, until a freak accident awakens something extraordinary within his new apprentice Dart. Transformed into a mighty dragon, Dougie and Dart uncover an impossible truth: their kind were once legendary rulers of the skies, until the ruthless wizard-CEO Hex shrank them, erased their memories, and stole their power to build his empire.
“With this new truth in front of their eyes, and in their hearts, Dougie and Dart must find the courage to rise, awaken their kind, and prove that even the smallest spark can light up the sky.” Fox welcomed the opportunity to play the scrappy, big-hearted lead character in Dragoons. “Dougie and Dart’s story is one I understand deeply, the idea that something immense can be sleeping inside you, just waiting for the right moment to be set free. This is a film for anyone who has ever felt overlooked, underestimated, or forgotten. I’m honored to help bring Dougie to life,” he said.
“Michael J. Fox is Dougie. From the moment we began developing this character, we knew we needed a voice that could carry both immense warmth and unshakable spirit. Michael brings all of that and more. He gives Dougie a soul that audiences of every age will root for from the first frame to the last,” Shea Wageman, CEO and President of Icon Creative Studio, said in a statement.
The Canadian-born Hollywood star has fought a long-running battle with Parkinson’s disease, which has influenced the types of acting roles he chooses to undertake in recent years. The Vancouver-based Icon Creative Studio also has several projects in development, including Charlie the Wonderdog, starring Owen Wilson and featuring original music by Bryan Adams.
Fox’s involvement in Dragoons also marks another notable voice acting role in a career that has increasingly focused on selective projects. In recent years, the actor has largely stepped back from on-screen performances while continuing to advocate for Parkinson’s disease research through The Michael J. Fox Foundation. His casting in Dragoons gives audiences an opportunity to hear one of Hollywood’s most recognizable voices return in a leading role, while bringing additional attention to a project that aims to deliver an uplifting story about courage, resilience, and self-discovery.
The Canadian company is best known for its production partnerships with Disney, Netflix, Apple TV+, Skydance, Warner Bros., Paramount, and Sony. The studio has worked on a variety of projects, including Sofia the First: Royal Magic, WondLa, Monsters at Work, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, Transformers: EarthSpark, Batwheels, and Clash of Clans.
Dragoons is produced by Wageman alongside Carson Loveday. Michael J. Fox is best known for his roles in Back to the Future and the television series Family Ties. Over the years, he has also lent his voice to several animated projects, including Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, the Stuart Little films, and television series such as Phineas and Ferb, Clone High, and Corner Gas Animated.
Additional casting announcements, story details, and release plans for Dragoons are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
