Obsession Eyes India’s 2026 Hollywood Crown After Extraordinary Week 2 Jump

Obsession box office crosses ₹66 crore in India after extraordinary second-week growth and strong third-week hold
June 16, 2026

Curry Barker’s Obsession is rewriting the box-office playbook in India. After 18 days in theaters, the horror phenomenon has amassed ₹66.55 crore net at the Indian box office, putting it within touching distance of both Michael (₹70.55 crore net) and Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary (₹75.15 crore net), currently the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2026 in the market.

However, the most remarkable aspect of Obsession’s success is not its overall total — it is how the film got there. Unlike most Hollywood releases, which tend to peak during their opening weekend before gradually declining, Obsession experienced an extraordinary surge in its second week. After collecting ₹18.55 crore during its first seven days, the film exploded to ₹31.25 crore in Week 2, representing a massive 68.5% increase.

Such growth is exceptionally rare for a wide Hollywood release in India. In an era where films are often heavily front-loaded, Obsession achieved the opposite, growing stronger as more audiences discovered it. The breakthrough came during the second weekend. The film earned ₹7.75 crore during its opening weekend, a respectable but unspectacular result for a major Hollywood horror release. One week later, however, its second weekend soared to ₹17.55 crore, a staggering 126% increase over its debut frame.

The jump transformed Obsession from a modest performer into one of the year’s biggest theatrical success stories and signaled that audience word-of-mouth had become the driving force behind its run.

The film expanded from just 859 shows on opening day to nearly 3,400 shows during its second week as multiplex chains and cinema operators increased screen allocation to meet growing demand. The expansion allowed the film to capitalize on rising audience interest, particularly among younger moviegoers who continued to fuel strong weekend business.

Even more impressive is the film’s performance in Week 3. Obsession collected ₹14.75 crore during its third weekend, dropping less than 16% from its massive second weekend haul. For a horror film entering its third weekend, the hold is exceptional and further demonstrates the strength of audience reception.

With the film already standing at ₹66.55 crore net after 18 days, its third-week total could still surpass its entire opening week collection of ₹18.55 crore. If achieved, it would become one of the rare Hollywood releases in India whose third week outperformed its first.

The film’s momentum has remained intact despite new competition entering the marketplace. Recent arrivals including Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, the horror title Backrooms, Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted 3D, and Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga have all been unable to significantly dent Obsession’s hold on audiences.

The success story extends beyond India. Globally, Obsession has accumulated approximately $286.5 million, emerging as one of the biggest surprise hits of 2026. The film continues to perform strongly across major territories including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and India.

Its worldwide total has already surpassed the reported $248.6 million global gross of The Blair Witch Project, making it one of the most successful films ever acquired following a festival premiere. The film has also moved beyond the worldwide earnings of Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning horror hit Get Out, which concluded its theatrical run with $259.9 million globally.

India has become one of the film’s most significant international markets. The current ₹66.55 crore total has already pushed Obsession past the lifetime earnings of several major horror titles and positioned it among the strongest-performing Hollywood horror releases the territory has ever seen.

Now, with only ₹4 crore separating it from Michael and ₹8.60 crore separating it from Project Hail Mary, the race for the top spot is officially on. What began as a modest opening has evolved into a genuine theatrical phenomenon. And if current trends continue, Obsession may soon complete one of the most remarkable box-office climbs seen in India in recent years.
