Greenland 2: Migration — Release Date: 9 January 2026.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin. Written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune, the film is an American post-apocalyptic survival thriller and a direct sequel to Greenland (2020).
Set five years after the catastrophic impact of the Clarke interstellar comet, the film returns to a world fundamentally altered by near-extinction. Much of Earth’s surface has been rendered uninhabitable, and surviving populations have retreated into fortified shelters and bunkers. The Garrity family—John, Allison, and their son Nathan—have survived within the relative safety of a Greenland bunker, where survival depends on discipline, rationing, and strict protocols.
As conditions within the bunker become increasingly untenable, the family is forced to confront a difficult reality: survival now requires movement rather than isolation. Leaving behind the protection that once ensured their safety, the Garritys embark on a hazardous journey across a devastated European landscape in search of a viable new home. Their migration exposes them to environmental collapse, fractured societies, and the lingering consequences of a world reshaped by disaster.
The narrative expands the scope of the original film by shifting from containment to traversal. Survival is no longer defined by securing entry into a shelter, but by navigating unstable territories marked by scarcity, military control, and moral compromise. Encounters with other survivors and armed authorities complicate the journey, testing the family’s unity and ethical boundaries.
Ric Roman Waugh’s direction continues the grounded, physical approach established in the first film, emphasizing realism over spectacle. Action sequences are framed as survival responses rather than heroics, while the emotional core remains anchored in parental responsibility and collective endurance. The character of Nathan, now portrayed by Roman Griffin Davis, continues to foreground vulnerability within a hostile world, reinforcing the film’s emphasis on human cost.
Shot across studio environments and natural locations in the United Kingdom and Iceland, the film uses stark landscapes to underscore themes of displacement and resilience. Greenland 2: Migration positions itself as a continuation that broadens the emotional and geographical canvas of the franchise, focusing on movement, adaptation, and the enduring instinct to protect family in a world rebuilt from ruin.
