Homebound (September 26, 2025) is an Indian Hindi-language drama directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, inspired by a New York Times article by Basharat Peer. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film explores the aspirations, struggles, and friendship of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who dream of joining the national police service. Balancing the pressures of ambition, societal expectations, and personal relationships, the story delves deeply into themes of resilience, loyalty, and the pursuit of dignity.
The narrative follows Mohammed Shoaib Ali (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa), who grow up together in a modest environment with dreams far larger than the circumstances around them. Both aspire to become police officers, believing the profession will bring them social respect and financial stability. Their bond is tested as they prepare for the competitive national police exams, facing not only the academic challenges but also pressures from family, society, and the realities of their socio-economic status.
As the duo works toward their goal, their friendship encounters friction. Ambition, fear of failure, and differing coping mechanisms strain their relationship, revealing both vulnerabilities and strengths. Janhvi Kapoor appears as Sudha Bharti, a supportive figure intertwined in their journey, adding nuance to the emotional narrative. The story also explores the influence of family dynamics, with Chandan’s parents and siblings playing key roles in shaping the protagonists’ decisions.
Homebound is notable for its grounded storytelling and realistic portrayal of contemporary social issues in India, particularly highlighting the aspirations of youth from rural areas. The film’s screenplay, co-developed with input from Martin Scorsese, who served as executive producer, emphasizes authenticity in character arcs, pacing, and emotional beats. Cinematography captures both the intimacy of personal moments and the expansive landscapes of Bhopal and surrounding regions, where principal photography took place in 2024.
Premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May 2025 and subsequently screened at Toronto International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival, Homebound received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, writing, and editing. The film combines social realism with a deeply personal story, offering audiences an empathetic and reflective cinematic experience.
