How to Train Your Dragon — Release Date: June 13, 2025.
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the film is a live-action fantasy adventure produced by Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, and Marc Platt Productions. It reimagines the beloved 2010 animated classic—loosely inspired by Cressida Cowell’s novel—and stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast.
Set in the Viking village of Berk, the story follows Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a resourceful but underestimated teenager struggling to live up to his father Stoick’s expectations as a warrior leader. Berk’s way of life is defined by constant conflict with dragons, creatures viewed solely as enemies responsible for raids and destruction. Hiccup, physically unsuited for traditional combat, turns instead to invention and observation in hopes of proving his worth.
During a dragon attack, Hiccup injures a rare and feared Night Fury but makes a pivotal choice when he encounters the creature helpless in the forest. Unable to kill it, Hiccup frees the dragon, initiating a bond that challenges everything Berk believes about dragons. Naming the Night Fury “Toothless,” Hiccup gradually learns that dragons are not inherently violent, but driven by fear and survival.
As Hiccup secretly befriends Toothless, he discovers patterns of dragon behaviour that allow him to excel in his village’s dragon-training program, earning admiration while concealing the truth behind his success. His growing confidence and shifting worldview put him at odds with Berk’s traditions and with Stoick, whose determination to eradicate dragons blinds him to alternative possibilities.
The conflict escalates when Hiccup learns of a greater threat controlling the dragons—a massive force that endangers both humans and dragons alike. Forced to choose between obedience and conviction, Hiccup steps into leadership not through strength, but empathy. His journey reframes heroism as understanding rather than domination.
Dean DeBlois’ live-action adaptation preserves the emotional core of the original while expanding its scale and physicality. Shot in Northern Ireland, the film grounds its fantasy in rugged landscapes and tactile realism, while John Powell’s returning score reinforces its emotional resonance.
How to Train Your Dragon is ultimately a story about rethinking inherited beliefs, forging unlikely friendships, and redefining courage. By centring compassion over conquest, the film reintroduces a modern fantasy classic for a new generation while honoring the spirit that made the original endure.
