The film follows characters navigating displacement, separation and identity during a time when borders were being redrawn and millions of lives were irrevocably changed. Within this historical setting, the narrative explores themes of love, longing and resilience as individuals attempt to preserve their relationships in the midst of uncertainty.

Diljit Dosanjh leads the film alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari, forming a multi-generational ensemble that reflects the personal and societal shifts of the era. The story intertwines intimate human experiences with the larger historical forces shaping the region, presenting a romantic drama grounded in a transformative moment in history.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the project brings together a familiar creative collaboration. The film reunites Ali with composer A. R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil, continuing a partnership known for music-driven storytelling. It also marks another collaboration between Ali and Diljit Dosanjh following Amar Singh Chamkila (2024). The film’s visual finishing includes color grading by redChillies.color.

Production was announced in June 2025, with principal photography commencing in August the same year. Filming concluded in December 2025 after schedules across multiple locations recreating the historical period. Promotional activity began in March 2026 with the unveiling of first-look posters ahead of the teaser release, which confirmed the film’s title.

Scheduled for theatrical release on 12 June 2026, Main Vaapas Aaunga positions itself as a period romantic drama exploring personal stories shaped by one of the defining historical moments of the Indian subcontinent.
