The Light follows Manuel, a Catholic priest who is approaching a decisive turning point in his life as he considers leaving the priesthood. At the same time, unresolved aspects of his past begin to resurface, confronting him with actions and decisions that continue to shape his present circumstances.

Set within the context of the Catholic Church and its institutional structures, the narrative explores themes of accountability, morality and personal reckoning. As Manuel faces increasing pressure from his past, the story examines the emotional and ethical consequences of concealed wrongdoing and the broader systems surrounding it.

Alberto San Juan portrays Manuel, with Pedro Casablanc, Miguel Rellán, María Galiana, Luis Callejo and Ramón Barea appearing in supporting roles. The ensemble cast contributes to a narrative centered on interpersonal tension and institutional conflict.

Directed by Fernando Franco, the film continues his work in character-driven drama, focusing on psychological complexity and socially rooted themes. Franco has described the film as addressing how abuse scandals within the Catholic Church are handled, emphasizing the distinction between moral transgressions and criminal acts.

The production was backed by RTVE, Movistar Plus+ and Canal Sur, with cinematography by Santiago Racaj. Filming took place in Vitoria-Gasteiz, including locations around the city’s historic Old Cathedral, contributing to the film’s grounded visual setting.

Distributed by Buena Vista International, The Light marks the first Fernando Franco feature to receive distribution through a major studio-backed release.
