The Films follows a therapist who enters an alternate, otherworldly dimension in search of a missing patient. This dimension, commonly referred to as the Backrooms, is depicted as an endless and disorienting labyrinth of empty, interconnected spaces. The environment operates outside conventional logic, presenting a setting where navigation, perception and time become increasingly unstable.

As the search progresses, the therapist encounters the psychological and physical challenges of this unfamiliar space. The narrative focuses on the experience of moving through an environment defined by repetition, isolation and unpredictability. The film situates its horror within this setting, emphasizing the tension created by the unknown nature of the dimension.

Chiwetel Ejiofor appears in a key role, alongside Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The cast forms part of a narrative that unfolds within a largely contained and surreal environment, with interactions shaped by the conditions of the Backrooms.

Directed by Kane Parsons, the film marks his feature-length directorial debut, following his work on the original video series released online. The project expands the concept into a full-length cinematic narrative while retaining the core elements associated with the source material.

Principal photography began in Vancouver in July 2025 and concluded in August 2025. The production involved constructing extensive physical sets to recreate the environment, supporting the film’s visual and spatial design.

Backrooms is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on 29 May 2026 by A24. Positioned within the science fiction horror genre, the film explores an alternate dimension through a character-driven search narrative.
