Ron Perlman has joined the cast of Seasons, Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming horror film starring Lily James and Jack Reynor. The casting announcement, made on August 21, adds the veteran genre actor to a project that is currently in production and brings together an established cast and an experienced horror-focused producing team.
Seasons is based on a viral horror short story by Matt and Harrison Query, which first gained attention on Reddit before being expanded into a full-length novel. The story follows a husband and wife who purchase their dream ranch, only to discover that the land is inhabited by ancient spirits. As the seasons change, the couple is forced to participate in increasingly disturbing rituals in order to survive.
The film is directed by Drew Hancock, who also wrote the screenplay. Seasons marks Hancock’s second feature following Companion, the science-fiction thriller that established him as a filmmaker working across genre cinema. The new film represents a larger-scale project, with Amazon MGM Studios backing the production and a cast that includes several established performers.
Perlman’s role is being kept under wraps. The actor joins James and Reynor in the main cast, although details about his character have not been disclosed. Perlman is currently appearing in Apple TV+’s Cape Fear series and has recently been seen in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Fallout and Poker Face. His extensive genre credits include Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy and Blade II.
The film has also assembled a notable producing team. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine are producing through 21 Laps, the company behind projects including Deadpool & Wolverine, The Odyssey and Stranger Things. James Wan and Michael Clear are producing through Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the production banner behind The Conjuring, Aquaman and the Insidious franchise. Scott Glassgold and Dan Cohen are also producing through 12:01 Films.
The combination gives Seasons a production team with experience across both large-scale commercial films and horror. Levy and Levine bring a track record in mainstream entertainment, while Wan and Clear have extensive experience developing horror franchises.
James plays one half of the couple at the centre of the story. Her recent credits include Wicked Little Letters, Cinderella and Pam & Tommy. Reynor, meanwhile, brings his own connection to folk horror, having starred in Ari Aster’s Midsommar, where his character is caught up in a disturbing series of rituals.
The casting of Reynor is particularly fitting given the themes of Seasons. While the new film is unrelated to Midsommar, both stories place their characters in environments shaped by ancient rituals and forces beyond their understanding.
Seasons is part of Amazon MGM Studios’ expanding horror slate across theatrical releases and Prime Video. The film is currently in production, and no release date has been announced yet.
With Perlman now joining James and Reynor, and filmmakers including Hancock, Levy and Wan involved, Seasons has assembled a notable combination of talent ahead of its eventual release. The film’s final release date and further details about Perlman’s character remain to be announced.
