Jacob Chase is not wasting any time. Just days after Insidious: Out of the Further opened in theatres and crossed $60.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Universal has confirmed his next project. Sleepover, a new original horror film from Blumhouse Atomic Monster, has been officially dated for October 8, 2027.
Plot details for Sleepover are being kept completely under wraps. Universal and Blumhouse have described the film as “the quintessential sleepover nightmare,” suggesting a story rooted in childhood terror and the particular kind of dread that comes from something going terribly wrong in a setting that is supposed to feel safe. Beyond that description, the filmmakers are keeping the story details under wraps.
Sleepover is co-written by Jacob Chase and Bryce McGuire, the director of Night Swim, the 2024 Blumhouse horror film about a haunted family swimming pool. McGuire wrote the original short story on which Sleepover is based, connecting the feature directly to its source material. Chase and McGuire will also executive produce the film alongside Bea Sequeira. Jason Blum will produce as founder and CEO of Blumhouse, with Lilly Tyson overseeing the project for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
Chase made his feature directorial debut with the 2010 Slamdance indie drama The Four Faced Liar. He later made his breakthrough in horror with Come Play, the 2020 Focus Features supernatural horror film starring Gillian Jacobs and centred on a creature that uses technology and screens to hunt its victims.
His work on Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth film in the long-running franchise, marked the beginning of his relationship with Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Sleepover confirms that collaboration is continuing beyond a single franchise project. For Chase, the move from an independent feature debut to directing a major horror franchise entry and then developing an original horror film with Blumhouse Atomic Monster represents a significant career step.
The October 8, 2027 release date places Sleepover in one of the busiest periods of the horror calendar. The film will arrive during the first full weekend of October, a traditionally strong window for genre releases. It will also enter a crowded month that includes J.J. Abrams’ The Great Beyond from Warner Bros., The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania from Amazon MGM and Sony Animation, and Universal’s legacy sequel to The Mummy, which reunites Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
Despite the competition, Blumhouse films have regularly performed in crowded release windows. Sleepover also has a straightforward horror hook in its “quintessential sleepover nightmare” premise, giving the studio a clear concept to build around as its marketing campaign takes shape.
The announcement continues a productive period for Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the combined horror banner formed by Jason Blum and James Wan. The company has also recently been involved with Skeletons, starring Brie Larson and directed by JT Mollner; Detention, directed by Paul Feig; and Paranormal Activity 8, with Chase Yi in the lead role. Sleepover adds another original horror concept to a slate being developed across multiple studios and platforms.
No cast has been announced for Sleepover yet. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on October 8, 2027.
